Sonic Forces (2017)

Three play styles in one short game: Modern Sonic’s boost stages, Classic Sonic’s 2D stages and a custom Avatar with a gadget. Around five hours. Europe got a Bonus Edition in a different sleeve with costume items; the game on the cartridge is identical. The cheapest way into Sonic on Switch.

Sonic Mania Plus (2018)

Sonic Mania itself was download-only in 2017; this 2018 cartridge is the only physical version, with the Encore DLC, Mighty and Ray included on the card. Made by fans-turned-developers and widely called the best 2D Sonic since the Mega Drive. If you buy one Sonic for the Switch, this is it.

Team Sonic Racing (2019)

Racing in teams of three: you slingshot off teammates, pass them items and win or lose together. Split-screen for four. Less content than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a different kind of race; the team mechanic is the reason to own it.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 (2019)

Twenty-odd Olympic events plus a set of 2D "Tokyo 1964" events in 8-bit and 16-bit style, and a story mode. Made for four players in a room; the Joy-Con motion controls are optional. The last Mario & Sonic game — the series ended when Sega lost the Olympic licence.

Sonic Colours: Ultimate (2021)

The 2010 Wii game in HD with a new Rival Rush mode and the Wisps’ powers intact. The Switch version launched with visual bugs that patches later fixed — a cartridge bought now downloads those updates on first start. Spelled Colours on the European box, Colors on the American one.

Sonic Frontiers (2022)

Sonic’s open-world experiment: five large islands, Cyber Space stages in between, and a genuinely good combat system. The Switch version runs at a lower resolution and frame rate than the other consoles but is complete, and the three free 2023 updates — including The Final Horizon — download to it.

Sonic Origins Plus (2023)

Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD, remastered in widescreen with new animated cutscenes, plus the twelve Game Gear games and Amy as a playable character. Note the fine print: on the cartridge is Sonic Origins; the Plus content comes as a download code in the box, so a second-hand copy has usually had that code used. The four main games are on the card regardless.

Sonic Superstars (2023)

A new 2D Sonic in the Mania mould but in 3D-rendered graphics, with Emerald powers and up to four players on one screen. Easier than Mania and made for playing with children; the Switch version is the weakest technically but the same game.

Sonic X Shadow Generations (2024)

Sonic Generations from 2011, remastered, plus an all-new Shadow campaign of about six hours with its own open hub. The Shadow half is the better of the two and the reason the game sold well. On Switch it runs at 30 frames per second; everywhere else at 60.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (2025)

The successor to Team Sonic Racing, with tracks that switch worlds mid-race through Travel Rings, and crossover characters from other Sega series. Released for the original Switch on 25 September 2025 alongside the other consoles; a separate Switch 2 version came later. Buy the one that matches your console — the Switch 2 cartridge does not fit a Switch 1.
