All Mario & Luigi games in order

Mario & Luigi is the handheld RPG series where the brothers travel as a pair and every attack is a timed button press. Six games and two remakes came out between 2003 and 2024, and two of them wear a different name on European boxes. Below are all eight releases in order, with the platforms linked — the DS games are the ones we stock and test most often — and buying notes for the cartridges.

Do you have to play them in order?

No. Every game tells its own story with its own gimmick — babies and time travel, Bowser’s body, Luigi’s dreams, paper Mario — and only one villain carries over: Fawful from Superstar Saga returns in Bowser’s Inside Story. What order does explain is the shape of the series: three AlphaDream handheld games in six years, two more on 3DS, two remakes, then a nine-year gap until Acquire made Brothership.

Which Mario & Luigi should you buy now?

The best one: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS) — playable on every DS, 2DS and 3DS, and the entry most fans name first.
Playing on Switch or Switch 2: Brothership — the only entry on current hardware.
The complete story on one system: a 3DS plays Dream Team, Paper Jam, both remakes and the two DS games.
The original cartridge: Superstar Saga on GBA — also in the second slot of a DS or DS Lite.

Buying Mario & Luigi second-hand

The DS games are region-free, the 3DS remakes are not

Partners in Time and Bowser’s Inside Story run on any DS, DS Lite, DSi, 2DS or 3DS, whatever region the cartridge came from. The two 3DS remakes are region-locked: a European 3DS needs the European cartridge, and our listings state the region.

Superstar Saga plays on the original DS and DS Lite

The GBA cartridge fits the second slot of a DS or DS Lite — not the DSi, 2DS or 3DS. If you want the first game on a newer handheld, the 3DS remake (Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions) is the way.

The Bowser’s Inside Story remake is the scarce one

The 3DS version from 2018/19 had a small print run and is usually the pricier cartridge today. The DS original is the same adventure and the easy way to play it — that is the copy we most often have in stock.

Brothership is a cartridge that also runs on Switch 2

The Switch release is region-free and plays on Switch 2 as well. Second-hand it is still young, so expect boxed copies rather than loose ones.

Do I need to play the Mario & Luigi games in order?

No. Each game is self-contained. Fawful, the villain of Superstar Saga, returns as the main villain of Bowser’s Inside Story — that is the only real callback, and the game explains him anyway.

How many Mario & Luigi games are there?

Six original games and two 3DS remakes: eight releases between 2003 and 2024. Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, Bowser’s Inside Story, Dream Team, Paper Jam and Brothership are the six.

What is the newest Mario & Luigi game?

Mario & Luigi: Brothership on Nintendo Switch, released in November 2024. It was developed by Acquire, because AlphaDream, the studio behind the first seven releases, closed in 2019.

Is Paper Jam a Paper Mario game?

It is a crossover: Paper Mario joins the brothers, but the game is a Mario & Luigi RPG by AlphaDream, with the timed-hit battles and the Bros. Attacks of the series. Sold as Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. in Europe.

Which Mario & Luigi game should I start with?

Bowser’s Inside Story on DS for the classic form — it is the best-regarded entry and plays on every DS and 3DS — or Brothership on Switch if you want the modern one.
