All Star Fox games in order

Star Fox is Nintendo’s space shooter, and in Europe it is the series with the most confusing box names of all: the first two games were sold here as Starwing and Lylat Wars. Below are all eight releases in order, with the platforms linked — the N64 and GameCube copies are the ones we stock and test — and buying notes that match the PAL names to the games.

The short answer

Star Fox / Starwing (1993, SNES) → Star Fox 64 / Lylat Wars (1997, N64) → Adventures (2002, GameCube) → Assault (2005, GameCube) → Command (2006, DS) → 64 3D (2011, 3DS) → Zero (2016, Wii U) → Star Fox 2 (2017, made in 1995). Start with Star Fox 64.

Every Star Fox game in order

  1. Star Fox · 1993 · Super Nintendo the Super FX polygon pioneer; sold as Starwing in Europe
  2. Star Fox 64 · 1997 · Nintendo 64 the series’ high point, with the Rumble Pak; Lylat Wars in Europe
  3. Star Fox Adventures · 2002 · GameCube Rare’s on-foot adventure on Dinosaur Planet, with flying between worlds
  4. Star Fox: Assault · 2005 · GameCube Namco’s return to the Arwing, plus on-foot and Landmaster missions
  5. Star Fox Command · 2006 · Nintendo DS stylus-controlled dogfights with branching stories and multiple endings
  6. Star Fox 64 3D · 2011 · Nintendo 3DS the N64 game remade for 3DS, with gyro aiming
  7. Star Fox Zero · 2016 · Wii U a retelling of 64 with GamePad aiming; Star Fox Guard came bundled
  8. Star Fox 2 · 2017 · Super NES Classic finished in 1995, unreleased for 22 years — the direct sequel to the first game

Do you have to play them in order?

No — the series keeps restarting. Star Fox 64 retells the SNES game, Zero retells 64, and 64 3D is 64 again. Adventures, Assault and Command are the three that add new stories, and each stands alone. What order does show is why the Switch has no new Star Fox of its own: after Zero in 2016 the series went quiet, and apart from the Switch Online re-releases Fox’s only recent flight is the Starlink crossover.

Which Star Fox should you buy now?

  • The essential one: Star Fox 64 — as Lylat Wars on a PAL Nintendo 64, or as 64 3D on a 3DS.
  • Dogfighting on GameCube: Assault — Arwing, Landmaster and four-player battles.
  • Something different: Adventures — Rare’s Zelda-style quest with Fox on foot.
  • On a Switch or Switch 2: Starlink: Battle for Atlas — the Star Fox story is exclusive to the Nintendo version.

Buying Star Fox second-hand

Starwing and Lylat Wars are Star Fox and Star Fox 64

Europe renamed the first two games for trademark reasons. A PAL cartridge labelled Lylat Wars is Star Fox 64 — the same game, and the version a European Nintendo 64 needs, because the N64 is region-locked. Starwing is the SNES original.

Lylat Wars came with the Rumble Pak

The European release was a bundle: cartridge plus Rumble Pak in the box. A loose cartridge is fine — the game plays without the pak — but a complete boxed copy should still have it. Our listings state what is included.

The GameCube pair are very different games

Adventures is mostly on foot and closer to Zelda; Assault brings the Arwing back. If you want the dogfighting, Assault is the one. Both are mini-discs — check the underside for scratches — and both play on an early Wii with GameCube ports.

Fox also flies in Starlink on Switch

Starlink: Battle for Atlas (2018) has an exclusive Star Fox story on Nintendo Switch, with Fox, the Arwing and Wolf. It is not a Star Fox game, but it is the only way to fly the Arwing on a Switch or Switch 2 today.

Questions we get asked

Do I need to play the Star Fox games in order?

No. Star Fox 64 retells the first game, Zero retells 64, and Adventures, Assault and Command each stand alone. Start with Star Fox 64 — or Lylat Wars, as the PAL cartridge says.

How many Star Fox games are there?

Eight releases: Star Fox, Star Fox 64, Adventures, Assault, Command, the 64 3D remake, Zero and the long-lost Star Fox 2. Star Fox Guard (2016) is a tower-defence spin-off, and Fox guests in Starlink: Battle for Atlas.

What is the newest Star Fox game?

Star Fox Zero on Wii U (2016) is the newest new game; Star Fox 2 followed in 2017 on the Super NES Classic, but it was made in 1995. No new Star Fox has been made for the Switch: the SNES and N64 games are in the Nintendo Switch Online libraries, and Fox guests in Starlink.

Is Lylat Wars the same as Star Fox 64?

Yes. Lylat Wars is the European title of Star Fox 64, renamed for trademark reasons. The game is identical; only the PAL cartridge runs on a European Nintendo 64.

Can I play Star Fox 2?

It is on the Super NES Classic Mini and in the Nintendo Switch Online SNES library; it was never released on a cartridge. The original 1993 game is on the same service.
