All Spyro games in order

Spyro is the purple dragon who started on the PlayStation and then spent a decade on Nintendo handhelds and GameCubes before the Reignited remake brought him back. The series has three layers — the original trilogy, the in-between years, the Legend reboot — and two European box names that hide familiar games. Below are all fourteen releases in order, with the platforms linked — the GBA, GameCube and Switch copies are the ones we stock and test — and buying notes for the second-hand copies.

Do you have to play them in order?

Only inside a trilogy. The three PlayStation games tell one loose story, and The Legend of Spyro is a separate, darker three-parter with its own Spyro and Cynder; the games in between are standalone adventures. What order does explain is the gap: after Dawn of the Dragon in 2008 the character lived on in Skylanders for a decade, until Reignited in 2018 remade the originals — and nothing new has followed.

Which Spyro should you buy now?

Playing, today: Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Switch) — the three classics remade, one region-free cartridge.
The darker story: The Legend of Spyro trilogy — A New Beginning on GameCube, the sequels on Wii.
Portable and cheap: the three GBA games — also in the second slot of a DS or DS Lite.
The curiosity: Shadow Legacy (DS) — the only Spyro with RPG levelling.

Gateway to Glimmer and Spyro Adventure are the European names

Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! was sold as Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer in Europe, and the GBA game Attack of the Rhynocs as Spyro Adventure. Same games — a second-hand listing may use either name, and this list gives both.

Reignited on Switch is the way to play the trilogy today

Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Switch, 2019) holds the three PlayStation games remade, on a region-free cartridge that also plays on Switch 2. The first PS4 and Xbox discs needed a download for games 2 and 3 — our listings state what is on the disc or cartridge.

The GBA games play on a DS or DS Lite

Season of Ice, Season of Flame and Attack of the Rhynocs are Game Boy Advance cartridges: region-free, and they fit the second slot of an original DS or DS Lite. They are isometric, not the 3D platformers of the consoles.

The GameCube discs play on an early Wii

Enter the Dragonfly, A Hero’s Tail and A New Beginning on GameCube run on the first Wii models with GameCube ports. Mini-discs: check the underside for scratches; we test every disc for loading.

Do I need to play the Spyro games in order?

Only within a trilogy. The original three (1998–2000) are one story, and The Legend of Spyro (2006–2008) is a separate three-part story with a different Spyro. Everything in between stands alone.

How many Spyro games are there?

Fourteen releases with Spyro in the lead, from Spyro the Dragon (1998) to the Reignited Trilogy (2018) — counting Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, which launched the Skylanders series. Add the later Skylanders games and the number roughly doubles.

What is the newest Spyro game?

Spyro Reignited Trilogy (2018; Switch and PC in 2019), a remake of the first three games. No new Spyro adventure has been released since Dawn of the Dragon in 2008.

Is Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer the same as Ripto’s Rage?

Yes. Gateway to Glimmer is the European title of Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, the second PlayStation game. In the Reignited Trilogy it is called Ripto’s Rage everywhere.

Which Spyro should I start with?

Spyro Reignited Trilogy on Switch: the three classics in one cartridge, playable by the whole family. For the darker story, start The Legend of Spyro at A New Beginning.
