Luigi’s Mansion is the series where Luigi, not Mario, gets the lead — and a vacuum cleaner instead of a jump. It is short, and the second game wears three names. Below are all five releases in order, with the platforms linked — the GameCube, 3DS and Switch copies are the ones we stock and test — and buying notes for the second-hand discs and cartridges.

Do you have to play them in order?
No. Every game is one ghost hunt with its own building — a mansion, a valley of mansions, a hotel — and Professor E. Gadd introduces the Poltergust anew each time. What order does explain is the shape of the series: one GameCube game, a twelve-year wait, then the 3DS era, then Switch. Luigi’s Mansion Arcade (2015) is a light-gun game for arcades only and never came home.
Which Luigi’s Mansion should you buy now?
- Playing, today: Luigi’s Mansion 3 (Switch) — the biggest one, with co-op from the first floor.
- The mission-based one on a TV: Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD (Switch) — the same game as Dark Moon, without the 3DS.
- The original, portable: the 2018 3DS remake — region-locked, so match your console.
- For the shelf: the 2001 GameCube disc — the launch game, and the one collectors ask for.
Buying Luigi’s Mansion second-hand
Dark Moon is Luigi’s Mansion 2
The second game was named Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon in America and Luigi’s Mansion 2 in Europe; the Switch version is Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD everywhere. Same game each time — do not buy the 3DS cartridge and the Switch cartridge expecting two different adventures.
The 3DS cartridges are region-locked
Dark Moon / Luigi’s Mansion 2 and the 2018 remake of the first game need a cartridge from your own region: a European 3DS or 2DS plays European copies. Our listings state the region.
The GameCube original also plays on an early Wii
The 2001 disc runs on any GameCube and on the first Wii models with GameCube ports and memory-card slots — not on the later Wii Family Edition or the Wii U. Check the underside of the mini-disc for scratches.
Both Switch games run on Switch 2
Luigi’s Mansion 3 and 2 HD are region-free cartridges and play on Switch 2 as well. Second-hand they are usually boxed, and 3 is the one with the most local co-op — a second Joy-Con is all you need.

Yes. Dark Moon is the American title of the 2013 3DS game that Europe sold as Luigi’s Mansion 2, and 2 HD on Switch is the same game in high definition.
Which Luigi’s Mansion should I start with?
Luigi’s Mansion 3 on Switch: the largest and most polished, with co-op from the start. The GameCube original is the collector’s choice; the 3DS remake is the easiest way to play it today.
