Series guide
All FIFA games in order
FIFA is the yearly football series from EA Sports, and its names are a trap: FIFA 99 came out in 1998, FIFA 06 in 2005, and “FIFA 24” never existed because the series was renamed EA Sports FC. Below are all thirty FIFA editions and the FC games that followed, in release order, with the Nintendo versions linked — the N64, 3DS and Switch copies are the ones we stock and test — and buying notes for the second-hand discs and cartridges.
The short answer
FIFA International Soccer (1993) → 95 → 96 → 97 → Road to World Cup 98 → FIFA 99 (1998) → 2000 → 2001 → Football 2002 to 2005 → FIFA 06 (2005) → one edition a year up to FIFA 23 (2022) → EA Sports FC 24 (2023) → FC 25 → FC 26 (2025). From FIFA 99 on, the name is the season, not the release year.

The spin-offs, kept apart
Every World Cup got its own game — World Cup 98, 2002 FIFA World Cup, 2006 FIFA World Cup, 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil — and so did three European Championships: UEFA Euro 2000, 2004 and 2008. FIFA Street (2005), FIFA Street 2 (2006), FIFA Street 3 (2008) and the 2012 FIFA Street reboot are the small-sided arcade line. None of them is part of the numbered list above, and none received a Legacy Edition.
FIFA on Nintendo consoles
- Nintendo 64 — FIFA 64 (1997), FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 and FIFA 99 — three cartridges, all PAL for a European console.
- Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance — FIFA 97 and FIFA 2000 on the Game Boy line; FIFA Football 2003 to FIFA 07 on Game Boy Advance. Region-free, and a GBA cartridge also plays in a DS or DS Lite.
- GameCube — FIFA Football 2002 to FIFA 07 — mini-discs, so check the underside for scratches.
- Nintendo DS and 3DS — FIFA 06 to FIFA 11 on DS, then FIFA 12 to FIFA 15 on 3DS. DS cartridges are region-free; 3DS cartridges are not.
- Wii and Wii U — FIFA 08 to FIFA 15 on Wii, FIFA 13 on Wii U. Wii discs are region-locked: a European Wii needs a PAL disc.
- Nintendo Switch — FIFA 18 to FIFA 23, then EA Sports FC 24 and later. FIFA 20 to 23 are Legacy Editions; FC 24 was the first Switch version in years to be the real thing.
Which FIFA should you buy now?
- Current squads: the newest EA Sports FC you can find — on PS5 the full version, on Switch also since FC 24.
- Football on the sofa for the least money: any Switch Legacy Edition (FIFA 20 to 23) or FIFA 19 — they play the same; pick on price.
- The retro cabinet: Road to World Cup 98 or FIFA 99 on Nintendo 64 — the two the collectors ask for.
- A handheld: FIFA 12 or 15 on 3DS, or FIFA Football 2004 on GBA — all cartridges, all offline.
Buying FIFA second-hand
Legacy Edition means last year’s game with new kits
On Switch (FIFA 20 to 23) and on Wii and 3DS (FIFA 14 and 15), EA did not build a new game: it reissued the previous one with updated teams, players and shirts. The gameplay is the same, so do not pay double for the year on the box — buy on price, or on the squads you want.
Online modes expire, local play does not
EA switches off the servers of older editions after a few years, which ends Ultimate Team and online seasons. Kick-off, career and local multiplayer keep working on every edition — and those are the modes most second-hand buyers play.
Region: Switch, DS and GBA are region-free, N64 and Wii are not
A Switch cartridge from any country runs on any Switch or Switch 2. Nintendo 64 and Wii need PAL copies on a European console, and a European 3DS needs a European 3DS cartridge. Our listings state the region.
FIFA 24 does not exist
EA lost the FIFA name after FIFA 23. The next edition is EA Sports FC 24 — same series, same clubs and competitions, different name on the box. If you are looking for a “FIFA 24”, that is the one.

Browse tested gamesQuestions we get asked
How many FIFA games are there?
Thirty FIFA-branded editions, from FIFA International Soccer (1993) to FIFA 23 (2022), followed by the EA Sports FC games: FC 24, FC 25 and FC 26 so far. Count the World Cup, Euro and FIFA Street spin-offs and the total passes forty.
Why is FIFA now called EA Sports FC?
EA’s licence with FIFA, the federation, ended after FIFA 23. The game continued under EA’s own name: EA Sports FC 24 (2023) was the first. The clubs, leagues and players are licensed separately, so those all stayed.
Why does FIFA 99 have a 1998 release date?
From FIFA 99 on, each edition is named after the season it covers, which starts after the autumn release. FIFA 99 came out in late 1998, FIFA 23 in autumn 2022 and EA Sports FC 26 in September 2025.
Which FIFA games are on the Nintendo Switch?
FIFA 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23, then EA Sports FC 24 and the later FC editions. FIFA 20 to 23 are Legacy Editions — the same game with updated squads — so an older one plays the same for less.
Which is the best FIFA on the Nintendo 64?
FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 is the one fans name first, with every national team and a full qualifying campaign; FIFA 99 refined it with the European Dream League. FIFA 64 is the earliest and roughest of the three.
