All GTA games in order
Grand Theft Auto counts to six but has released seventeen games, because the numbers skip the ones that matter most to many players — Vice City, San Andreas, the two Stories — and because three handheld games were built from scratch instead of being ports. Below are all seventeen releases in order, with the platforms linked — the DS, Switch and PlayStation copies are the ones we stock and test — and buying notes for the second-hand copies.

Do you have to play them in order?
No. Every GTA is its own story with its own cast, and the cities come back with new people in them. What release order does show is the shape of the series: the two top-down games, the 3D era that III, Vice City and San Andreas built on one engine, the HD era of IV and its episodes, and then V, which has carried the series for more than a decade through GTA Online. The handheld games follow the same pattern one step behind — top-down on Game Boy Color, GBA and DS while the consoles had already gone 3D.
Which GTA should you buy now?
- The modern one: GTA V on PS4 or PS5 — the PS4 disc is the cheap way in, the PS5 version the fast-loading one.
- The classics, on a Nintendo console: the Trilogy – Definitive Edition on Switch — III, Vice City and San Andreas on one cartridge.
- On a handheld: Chinatown Wars on the DS — an original game, not a port, and still the best-reviewed portable GTA.
- Waiting for VI: it arrives on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series; there is nothing to pre-own but a console.
Buying GTA second-hand
Two numbering systems, one series
The numbered games are I, 2, III, IV, V and VI. Vice City and San Andreas sit between III and IV, Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories are prequels to III and Vice City, and Chinatown Wars belongs to the IV era. "Play them in order" usually means III → Vice City → San Andreas → IV → V, which is the order this list gives.
The Nintendo games are originals, not ports
GTA on the Game Boy Color is the whole 1997 game shrunk down, GTA 2 on GBC is its own version, GTA Advance is a new top-down story in Liberty City, and Chinatown Wars was built for the DS with the touch screen in mind. None of them is a cut-down III or IV. The Trilogy – Definitive Edition on Switch is the only 3D GTA on Nintendo hardware.
GTA V on PS4 is the same game as on PS5, with a slower load
The PS4 disc plays on a PS5 and carries GTA Online; the PS5 version adds the faster loading and the 4K modes. Both are the versions we stock — the PS5 copy also sealed. A used PS4 disc is the cheapest way into Los Santos.
PEGI 18 — and check the disc or cartridge, not the box
Every 3D GTA is rated 18. On the Switch, the Trilogy is a cartridge with all three games on it and no download code; on PS4 the Trilogy disc holds all three too. Chinatown Wars on DS uses a save on the cartridge, which we test before listing.

Do I need to play the GTA games in order?
No. Each game is a self-contained story, and the settings repeat with different casts — Liberty City in III and IV, Vice City twice, San Andreas in the 2004 game and in V. Release order (III, Vice City, San Andreas, IV, V) is the order most people mean, and the Trilogy on Switch or PS4 covers the first three of those in one box.
How many GTA games are there?
Sixteen releases from 1997 to the Trilogy – Definitive Edition, counting the London expansions, the two IV episodes, GTA Online and the handheld games; GTA VI makes seventeen when it arrives. This list leaves out the mobile ports of III, Vice City and San Andreas.
When does GTA VI come out?
Rockstar has announced 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, after two delays from 2025 and May 2026. No PC or Nintendo version has been announced.
Is there a GTA on the Nintendo Switch?
One: Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition (2021), with III, Vice City and San Andreas on a single region-free cartridge that also plays on Switch 2. Earlier Nintendo GTAs are the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and DS games.
Which GTA should I start with?
GTA V for the modern one, or the Trilogy – Definitive Edition for the three classics in one go. On a handheld, Chinatown Wars on the DS is the pick.
