All Crash Bandicoot games in order

Crash started as Sony’s mascot and then went everywhere: Game Boy Advance, GameCube, DS and Wii, before the remakes brought him to the Switch. Five studios made the games, Europe renamed two of them, and the fourth numbered game skips seven of the ones in between. Below are all nineteen console releases in order, with the platforms linked — the GBA, GameCube, Switch and PS4 copies are the ones we stock and test — and buying notes for the second-hand copies.

The short answer

Crash Bandicoot (1996) → Cortex Strikes Back (1997) → Warped (1998) → Crash Team Racing (1999) → Crash Bash (2000) → The Wrath of Cortex (2001) → the GBA years (XS 2002 to Fusion 2004) → Twinsanity (2004) → the Radical era (Tag Team Racing 2005 to Mind over Mutant 2008) → N. Sane Trilogy (2017) → Nitro-Fueled (2019) → Crash 4 (2020) → Team Rumble (2023). Start with the N. Sane Trilogy.

Do you have to play them in order?

Only the numbered platformers. The first three tell one loose story about Cortex, and Crash 4 continues it straight from the end of Warped — Toys for Bob numbered it four to say exactly that. Everything else is a side road: two kart racers, two party games, the Traveller’s Tales and Radical platformers with their own designs, and a run of handheld games that mostly stand alone. The order that does matter for a buyer is the studio: Naughty Dog, then Traveller’s Tales and Vicarious Visions, then Radical, then the remakes.

Which Crash Bandicoot should you buy now?

  • Playing, today: N. Sane Trilogy on Switch — the three classics, one region-free cartridge.
  • The new one: Crash 4: It’s About Time — the direct sequel to Warped, on Switch or PS4.
  • Portable and cheap: Crash Bandicoot XS on the Game Boy Advance — also in the second slot of a DS or DS Lite.
  • For the GameCube: The Wrath of Cortex (De Wraak van Cortex) — the first Crash on a Nintendo home console.

Buying Crash Bandicoot second-hand

XS and Fusion are the European names

Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure was sold as Crash Bandicoot XS in Europe, and Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto’s Rampage as Crash Fusion (paired with Spyro Orange, sold here as Spyro Fusion). Same games — a second-hand listing may use either name, and this list gives both.

De Wraak van Cortex is The Wrath of Cortex

The Dutch GameCube and PS2 boxes carry the translated title De Wraak van Cortex. The disc is the European PAL release with the game in English; only the box and manual are Dutch. GameCube mini-discs run on the first Wii models with GameCube ports.

N. Sane Trilogy on Switch is the way to play the originals

The Switch cartridge holds all three PlayStation games remade and is region-free, so it plays on any Switch, Switch Lite or Switch 2. Crash 4 on Switch is a cartridge too; on PS4 it is a disc. Both are the versions we stock and test.

The GBA games fit a DS or DS Lite

XS, N-Tranced, Nitro Kart and Fusion are Game Boy Advance cartridges: region-free, and they slot into the second bay of an original DS or DS Lite (not a DSi or 3DS). Crash of the Titans on GBA is the last one; its DS version is a different game.

Questions we get asked

Do I need to play the Crash Bandicoot games in order?

Only the numbered ones. Crash 1, 2 and 3 tell one loose story, and Crash 4: It’s About Time picks up directly after Warped — it deliberately skips everything released in between. The racing, party and Titans games stand alone.

How many Crash Bandicoot games are there?

Nineteen console and handheld releases, from Crash Bandicoot (1996) to Crash Team Rumble (2023), plus a handful of mobile games that this list leaves out. Counting every port separately the number roughly doubles.

What is the newest Crash Bandicoot game?

Crash Team Rumble (2023), an online team game on PlayStation and Xbox. The newest platformer is Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time (2020; Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series in 2021).

Is Crash Bandicoot XS the same as The Huge Adventure?

Yes. XS is the European title of Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure, the first Game Boy Advance game. In the same way Crash Fusion is the European Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto’s Rampage.

Which Crash Bandicoot should I start with?

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy on Switch or PS4: the three classics remade, and the first game is still the hardest. For something on a handheld, XS on the Game Boy Advance plays like a real Crash game.
