All Tomb Raider games in order

By Lenn Hodes · founder — every cartridge tested by hand

Tomb Raider has had three Laras: Core Design’s original from 1996, Crystal Dynamics’ redesign from 2006, and the young survivor of the 2013 reboot. Two games are simply called Tomb Raider, two more are remakes of the first one, and the remasters bundle the rest — so the order needs a map. Below are all twelve mainline games in release order, then the remasters and the two 2027 games, with the platforms linked and buying notes for the PS4 and Game Boy Color copies we stock and test.

The short answer

Tomb Raider (1996) → II → III → The Last Revelation → Chronicles (2000) → The Angel of Darkness (2003) → Legend (2006) → Anniversary → Underworld (2008) → Tomb Raider (2013) → Rise (2015) → Shadow (2018) → Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst (2027). Start with the 2013 reboot.

Every mainline Tomb Raider in order

  1. Tomb Raider · 1996 · PlayStation, Saturn, PC Core Design’s original: Lara Croft, the T-Rex in the valley, the grid-based climbing everyone learned by feel
  2. Tomb Raider II · 1997 · PlayStation, PC Venice, the Great Wall, the Maria Doria — the dagger of Xian, and the best-selling game of the classic run
  3. Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft · 1998 · PlayStation, PC India, London, Nevada, Antarctica; harder and darker than II
  4. Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation · 1999 · PlayStation, Dreamcast, PC Egypt from start to finish, and the ending where Lara is buried under the pyramid
  5. Tomb Raider Chronicles · 2000 · PlayStation, Dreamcast, PC four flashback adventures told at Lara’s memorial — the last game on the original engine
  6. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness · 2003 · PlayStation 2, PC the troubled Paris-and-Prague game that ended Core Design’s run with the series
  7. Tomb Raider: Legend · 2006 · PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PC, PSP, GameCube, DS, GBA Crystal Dynamics takes over: a new Lara, a grapple, and the one Tomb Raider on GameCube — the DS and GBA versions are separate games
  8. Tomb Raider: Anniversary · 2007 · PS2, Xbox 360, PC, PSP, Wii the first game remade on the Legend engine; the Wii version adds pointer puzzles
  9. Tomb Raider: Underworld · 2008 · PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, PS2, DS the end of the Legend trilogy, from the Mediterranean to Helheim; the DS version is again its own game
  10. Tomb Raider · 2013 · PS3, Xbox 360, PC (Definitive Edition PS4, Xbox One 2014) the reboot: young Lara shipwrecked on Yamatai — the start of the Survivor trilogy
  11. Rise of the Tomb Raider · 2015 · Xbox One, Xbox 360 (PC 2016, PS4 2016 as 20 Year Celebration) Siberia and the lost city of Kitezh; the PS4 disc came a year late and with every DLC on it
  12. Shadow of the Tomb Raider · 2018 · PS4, Xbox One, PC (Definitive Edition 2019) Peru and the hidden city of Paititi, and the end of the Survivor trilogy — the newest mainline game

The remasters and what comes next

  1. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered · 2024 · PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch, PC the first three games plus their expansions, with a modern-graphics toggle and tank controls kept — released 14 February 2024
  2. Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered · 2025 · PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch, PC The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness, the same treatment, one year later to the day
  3. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis · 2027 · PS5, Xbox Series, PC, Switch 2 a full remake of the 1996 game by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, due 12 February 2027
  4. Tomb Raider: Catalyst · 2027 · PS5, Xbox Series, PC the next new Tomb Raider, set in northern India, built in Unreal Engine 5 and due later in 2027

Do you have to play them in order?

Only within an era. The six classic games follow one Lara but each adventure is complete in itself; Legend, Anniversary and Underworld are a trilogy in which Anniversary is a remake of the first game slotted into the middle; and the 2013 reboot, Rise and Shadow tell one story from shipwreck to Paititi and should be played in that order. The 2027 pair starts the map again: Legacy of Atlantis retells 1996, Catalyst goes somewhere new.

Which Tomb Raider should you buy now?

  • The modern series: Tomb Raider (2013), then Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration and Shadow Definitive Edition — the complete Survivor trilogy on three PS4 discs that play on PS5.
  • The originals: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered — three games and their expansions on one disc, tank controls and all.
  • The middle era: Legend — on GameCube if you want it on Nintendo hardware, and Anniversary on Wii as its companion.
  • In your pocket: Tomb Raider on Game Boy Color — a real Core Design game, not a cut-down port.

Buying Tomb Raider second-hand

The PS4 discs marked 20 Year Celebration and Definitive Edition are the complete games

Rise of the Tomb Raider only reached PlayStation as the 20 Year Celebration, which carries every expansion — Baba Yaga, Cold Darkness Awakened, Blood Ties — on the disc. Shadow’s Definitive Edition does the same for its seven DLC tombs. On a plain Shadow disc the tombs are downloads that were sold separately. Both PS4 discs play on a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive.

The Game Boy Color games are original games, not ports

Tomb Raider (2000) and Curse of the Sword (2001) on Game Boy Color are side-scrolling platformers made for the handheld by Core Design, and The Prophecy (2002) on GBA is an isometric one. None of them is a version of a console game. They have no region lock and play on any Game Boy Color, Advance or SP; we test that a cartridge still saves before listing it.

Legend on GameCube, Wii for Anniversary and Underworld

If you want Tomb Raider on a Nintendo home console, Legend is the only GameCube game and Anniversary and Underworld the two Wii games — the Wii versions add pointer controls and are otherwise the same adventures. The DS and GBA versions that share their names are different, smaller games.

PS4 discs play on a PS5

Every PS4 Tomb Raider — the 2013 Definitive Edition, Rise, Shadow and both Remastered collections — runs on a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition has no drive, so a disc is no use to it. Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst are PS5 games; there is no PS4 version planned.

Questions we get asked

Do I need to play the Tomb Raider games in order?

Only inside a trilogy. The classic games (1996-2003) are one continuous Lara but each stands alone; Legend, Anniversary and Underworld form a trilogy that ends with Underworld; the reboot Tomb Raider (2013), Rise and Shadow are the Survivor trilogy and should be played in that order. Legacy of Atlantis (2027) retells the first game, and Catalyst starts something new.

How many Tomb Raider games are there?

Twelve mainline games from Tomb Raider (1996) to Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018), plus the two Remastered collections, the three Game Boy games, the Lara Croft spin-offs (Guardian of Light, Temple of Osiris, Lara Croft Go) and the handheld versions of Legend and Underworld. Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst bring the count to fourteen in 2027.

Which Tomb Raider should I start with?

Tomb Raider (2013) if you want the modern series from the beginning — it is the reboot everything since builds on. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered if you want the original Lara with her original controls. Legend if you want the middle era; it is short, friendly and still plays well.

What is the newest Tomb Raider game?

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018) is the newest mainline game, and Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered (February 2025) the newest release. Two games are coming in 2027: Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the first game, on 12 February 2027, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst later that year.

Which Tomb Raider games are on Nintendo consoles?

GameCube: Legend. Wii: Anniversary and Underworld. DS: Legend and Underworld as separate games. GBA: Legend and The Prophecy. Game Boy Color: Tomb Raider and Curse of the Sword. Switch: both Remastered collections. Switch 2: Legacy of Atlantis in 2027.
