Spider-Man has had a game on almost every console since 1982, which is exactly why the list is confusing: film games, comic games, and handheld versions that share a name with a console game and nothing else. Below are the twenty-two main console games in release order — the GBA, GameCube, NES and PlayStation copies are the ones we stock and test — with the buying notes that tell the city games from the side-scrollers.

Do you have to play them in order?

No. Almost every Spider-Man game before 2018 is a self-contained story, and the film games follow their film rather than each other. What the order shows is three eras: the 2D years up to 1995, the 3D years that Neversoft opened in 2000 and Treyarch’s Spider-Man 2 defined in 2004, and the Insomniac era since 2018, which is the only real series — Miles Morales continues the 2018 game and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 continues both.

Which Spider-Man should you buy now?

• The one to start with: Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) — on a PS4 disc it plays on PS5 too.
• The newest: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5, after Miles Morales.
• The classic: Spider-Man 2 (2004) on GameCube, PS2 or Xbox — the web-swinging that the modern games are built on.
• On GameCube: Ultimate Spider-Man — cel-shaded, half of it as Venom.
• On GBA: Mysterio’s Menace — the handheld game worth owning for its own sake.
