All Resident Evil games in order

By Lenn Hodes · founder — every cartridge tested by hand

Resident Evil has been remade more than any series in gaming, and that is what makes the order hard: four of the main games exist twice, the numbering skips Code: Veronica and Zero, and the newest game is called Requiem, not 9. Below are the seventeen mainline releases in order — remakes included — then the Nintendo spin-offs, with the platforms linked and the buying notes for the GameCube, Wii, 3DS and PlayStation copies we stock and test.

The short answer

Resident Evil (1996) → 2 (1998) → 3 (1999) → Code: Veronica (2000) → the remake and Zero (2002) → 4 (2005) → 5 (2009) → Revelations and 6 (2012) → Revelations 2 (2015) → 7 (2017) → the 2 and 3 remakes (2019, 2020) → Village (2021) → the 4 remake (2023) → Requiem (2026). Start with the Resident Evil 2 remake.

Every mainline Resident Evil in order

  1. Resident Evil · 1996 · PlayStation (Director’s Cut 1997) the Spencer Mansion, Chris and Jill, the door-loading screens — survival horror named itself after this game
  2. Resident Evil 2 · 1998 · PlayStation, N64 (1999), Dreamcast, GameCube Leon and Claire in Raccoon City on two discs; the N64 cartridge is a technical marvel with the full FMV squeezed in
  3. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis · 1999 · PlayStation, Dreamcast, GameCube Jill’s escape from the city with Nemesis on her heels — shorter, faster, and the first with a dodge
  4. Resident Evil – Code: Veronica · 2000 · Dreamcast, PS2 (X, 2001), GameCube the real fourth game in the story — Claire and Chris against the Ashfords; never remade
  5. Resident Evil (remake) · 2002 · GameCube (HD 2015 on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch 2019) the GameCube-exclusive rebuild of the first game with the Crimson Heads — the version to play the original in
  6. Resident Evil Zero · 2002 · GameCube (HD 2016) the prequel on the train with Rebecca and Billy, and the partner-swapping system
  7. Resident Evil 4 · 2005 · GameCube, PS2, Wii (2007), and almost everything since Leon in the Spanish village, the over-the-shoulder camera that changed action games — two discs on GameCube; the Wii Edition has pointer aiming
  8. Resident Evil 5 · 2009 · PS3, Xbox 360, PC (PS4, Xbox One, Switch later) Chris and Sheva in Kijuju, built for two-player co-op; the end of Wesker’s story
  9. Resident Evil: Revelations · 2012 · 3DS (Wii U, PS3, 360, PC 2013; PS4, Xbox One, Switch 2017) Jill on the Queen Zenobia — made for the 3DS and the best-looking game on it, then ported everywhere
  10. Resident Evil 6 · 2012 · PS3, Xbox 360, PC (PS4, Xbox One, Switch later) four crossing campaigns, Leon, Chris, Jake and Ada — the biggest and the most divisive
  11. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 · 2015 · PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360, PC, Vita (Switch 2017) Claire and Barry’s daughter Moira, in four episodes with local co-op
  12. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard · 2017 · PS4, Xbox One, PC (PS5, Xbox Series 2022, Switch 2 2026) first person, the Baker house, Ethan Winters — the reset that brought the horror back
  13. Resident Evil 2 (remake) · 2019 · PS4, Xbox One, PC (PS5, Xbox Series 2022, Switch 2 October 2026) the modern rebuild with Mr. X in the police station — the template for the remakes that followed
  14. Resident Evil 3 (remake) · 2020 · PS4, Xbox One, PC (PS5, Xbox Series 2022, Switch 2 October 2026) shorter than the original and without its branching, but Nemesis is still Nemesis
  15. Resident Evil Village · 2021 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC (Switch 2 2026) the eighth game: Ethan again, Lady Dimitrescu, and the castle-village-factory tour
  16. Resident Evil 4 (remake) · 2023 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, PC (Switch 2 October 2026) the 2005 game rebuilt with the knife parry — a remake that most players now prefer to the original
  17. Resident Evil Requiem · 2026 · PS5, Xbox Series, PC, Switch 2 released 27 February 2026: the ninth mainline game, with Grace Ashcroft returning to Raccoon City thirty years after the outbreak

The Nintendo spin-offs in order

Five games that only exist because of a Nintendo handheld or the Wii Remote — and the only Resident Evils on a Game Boy, a DS and a 3DS cartridge.

  1. Resident Evil Gaiden · 2001 · Game Boy Color Leon and Barry on a cruise ship in a top-down game with a first-person shooting minigame — the only Resident Evil on a Game Boy
  2. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence · 2006 · Nintendo DS the 1996 original on a DS cartridge, the only Resident Evil on the DS, with a Rebirth mode that adds touch-screen puzzles and knife fights
  3. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles · 2007 · Wii (PS3 2012) an on-rails shooter retelling Zero, 1 and 3 for the Wii Remote and the Zapper
  4. Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles · 2009 · Wii (PS3 2012) the same form for 2 and Code: Veronica, plus a new South American chapter
  5. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D · 2011 · Nintendo 3DS the score-attack mode from 4 and 5 as a standalone cartridge — and the cartridge whose save can never be erased

Do you have to play them in order?

Not strictly, but the story does run in one line, and it is not the release order. Zero comes before the mansion, Code: Veronica is the fourth chapter even though 4 has the number, and the two Revelations sit between 4 and 5 and between 5 and 6. The remakes replace their originals for story purposes — play the 2019 Resident Evil 2 and you have played Resident Evil 2. The clean modern path is 7 → Village → Requiem, which share Ethan Winters’ story and then hand over to Grace Ashcroft; the classic path is the remake → 2 → 3 → 4.

Which Resident Evil should you buy now?

  • The best starting point: Resident Evil 2 (2019) — on a PS4 disc it plays on PS5 with the free upgrade.
  • The newest: Resident Evil Requiem on PS5 or Switch 2.
  • The classic on original hardware: Resident Evil 4 on GameCube — two discs, and the version everything else is measured against.
  • For the Wii Remote: The Umbrella Chronicles — three games’ worth of story as a light-gun shooter.
  • On a 3DS: Revelations first, The Mercenaries 3D if you want score-attack in your pocket.

Buying Resident Evil second-hand

The Mercenaries 3D keeps its previous owner forever

Capcom shipped The Mercenaries 3D without any way to delete the save data — not from the game, not from the 3DS menu. A second-hand cartridge therefore arrives with the first owner’s progress and unlocks, permanently. It plays fine, and the unlocks are a head start rather than a problem, but you cannot start from zero. Every copy we list says so.

Resident Evil 4 on GameCube is two discs — check for both

The GameCube release of Resident Evil 4 comes on two 8 cm mini-discs, and a used copy is only complete with both; the Wii Edition (2007) is one disc and adds pointer aiming and the Separate Ways chapter the GameCube version never got. Both play on a PAL GameCube; the GameCube discs also play on an early Wii with the GameCube ports.

The GameCube has two Resident Evils that started there

The 2002 remake of the first game and Resident Evil Zero were GameCube exclusives for more than a decade, until the HD versions of 2015 and 2016. On the original discs they are still the way many players prefer them, with the pre-rendered backgrounds at native resolution and the GameCube controller. Capcom also put 2, 3 and Code: Veronica on the GameCube in 2003.

PS4 discs play on a PS5 — and most got a free PS5 upgrade

Resident Evil 7, the 2 and 3 remakes and Village on a PS4 disc all run on a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive, and all four received a free PS5 version in 2022 — the disc still has to be in the drive. Requiem and the 4 remake on PS5 are PS5 discs. A PS5 Digital Edition has no drive, so no disc plays on it.

Questions we get asked

What is the story order of the Resident Evil games?

Zero (1998, the train) → Resident Evil (1998, the mansion) → 2 and 3 (1998, Raccoon City) → Code: Veronica (1998) → 4 (2004) → Revelations (2005) → 5 (2009) → Revelations 2 (2011) → 6 (2013) → 7 (2017) → Village (2021) → Requiem (2028). The remakes tell the same stories as the games they replace.

How many Resident Evil games are there?

Nine numbered games from Resident Evil (1996) to Requiem (2026), plus Code: Veronica, Zero and the two Revelations, which are mainline in all but name — thirteen main games. Add the four modern remakes and the spin-offs (the Chronicles rail shooters, Mercenaries 3D, Deadly Silence, Gaiden, Outbreak, Survivor, Operation Raccoon City and more) and the count runs past thirty.

Which Resident Evil should I start with?

Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) if you want classic horror in a modern game; Resident Evil 4 (the 2023 remake or the GameCube original) for the action side; Resident Evil 7 if you want to be scared. Requiem is built to be a starting point too, but it lands better after 2 and 3.

What is the newest Resident Evil game?

Resident Evil Requiem, released on 27 February 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the ninth numbered game and follows Grace Ashcroft, an FBI analyst, back to the ruins of Raccoon City.

Which Resident Evil games are on Nintendo consoles?

GameCube: the 2002 remake, Zero, 2, 3, Code: Veronica X and 4. Wii: 4 Wii Edition, Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles, plus ports of Zero and the remake. DS: Deadly Silence. 3DS: Revelations and The Mercenaries 3D. Game Boy Color: Gaiden. Switch: the remake and Zero as the Origins Collection, both Revelations on cartridge, 4, 5 and 6 as downloads, and 7 and Village as cloud versions. Switch 2: 7, Village and Requiem since 27 February 2026, with the 2, 3 and 4 remakes following on 16 October 2026.
