All Assassin’s Creed games in order

By Lenn Hodes · founder — every cartridge tested by hand

Assassin’s Creed has two orders and they disagree completely: the release order starts in the Crusades and the story order starts in ancient Greece. Below are all fifteen main games in release order with their historical setting in each line, then the spin-offs and collections — the Switch and PlayStation copies are the ones we stock and test — and the buying notes on which cartridges are complete.

The short answer

Assassin’s Creed (2007) → II → Brotherhood → Revelations (2011) → III → IV: Black Flag (2013) → Rogue and Unity (2014) → Syndicate → Origins (2017) → Odyssey → Valhalla (2020) → Mirage (2023) → Shadows (2025) → Black Flag Resynced (2026). Start with II or Origins.

The spin-offs and collections in order

  1. Altaïr’s Chronicles and Bloodlines · 2008 · DS, PSP the two handheld originals — Altaïr’s Chronicles on DS (2008) and Bloodlines on PSP (2009); the only Assassin’s Creed on a DS cartridge

Do you have to play them in order?

Only for the modern-day story, which runs in release order and matters less with every game. The historical stories are mostly self-contained; the exceptions are Ezio’s trilogy (II → Brotherhood → Revelations), Mirage after Valhalla, and Black Flag Resynced, whose present-day thread picks up where Shadows left off. The release order does show the series’ two halves: the stealth games up to Syndicate, and the RPGs from Origins on — with Mirage as the one step back.

Which Assassin’s Creed should you buy now?

  • On a Switch: The Rebel Collection — Black Flag and Rogue, complete, on one region-free cartridge.
  • The classic trilogy: The Ezio Collection, on PS4 or Switch.
  • The RPG era: Odyssey for size, Origins for story — both PS4 discs that play on PS5.
  • The newest: Black Flag Resynced on PS5, or Shadows if you want a new story.
  • The best-seller: Valhalla — on a PS5 disc, with the largest campaign in the series.

Buying Assassin’s Creed second-hand

The Switch cartridges are complete editions

The Rebel Collection holds Black Flag with Freedom Cry and every DLC, plus Rogue and its DLC, on one cartridge; The Ezio Collection holds three games and their DLC; III Remastered includes Liberation. On Switch they are downloads too, but the cartridges are region-free and need no code — check that the case actually contains a cartridge, because some Switch boxes carry only a download code.

The Wii U got two, and they play only there

Assassin’s Creed III and IV: Black Flag came to the Wii U, with the map on the GamePad. They are proper versions of the games, not cut down, but a Wii U disc plays only on a Wii U — not on a Wii and not on a Switch. If you want Black Flag on a Nintendo console today, the Switch Rebel Collection is the one to buy.

PS4 discs play on a PS5 — and the big ones need a big download

Origins, Odyssey and the PS4 disc of Valhalla and Mirage all run on a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive; the Valhalla and Mirage PS4 discs include the PS5 upgrade. Expect updates of tens of gigabytes on the recent games before they play. A PS5 Digital Edition has no drive, so no disc plays on it. Black Flag Resynced is a PS5 disc only.

Online features come and go

Ubisoft has closed the online services of several older games — the multiplayer of Brotherhood, Revelations and III on the old consoles, for example — while the campaigns remain untouched. Everything in this series is playable from start to finish offline; only the multiplayer and the companion-app extras of the 2010-2015 games are gone.
