All Call of Duty games in order
By Lenn Hodes · founder — every cartridge tested by hand
Call of Duty has shipped a new game every year since 2005, from three studios taking turns, and the names loop back on themselves: there are two Modern Warfare 2s, two Modern Warfare 3s and seven Black Ops. Below are all twenty-three mainline games in release order, with the sub-series untangled — the PS4, PS5 and DS copies are the ones we stock and test — and the buying notes about which discs are complete and which handheld versions are their own games.
The short answer
Call of Duty (2003) → 2 → 3 → 4: Modern Warfare (2007) → World at War → Modern Warfare 2 → Black Ops (2010) → MW3 → Black Ops II → Ghosts → Advanced Warfare → Black Ops III (2015) → Infinite Warfare → WWII → Black Ops 4 → Modern Warfare (2019) → Black Ops Cold War → Vanguard → MWII → MWIII → Black Ops 6 → Black Ops 7 (2025) → Modern Warfare 4 (2026). Start with Modern Warfare (2019).

Every mainline Call of Duty in order
- Call of Duty · 2003 · PC — Infinity Ward’s Second World War original — American, British and Soviet campaigns; the console version was Finest Hour (2004), a different game
- Call of Duty 2 · 2005 · PC, Xbox 360 — an Xbox 360 launch title and the game that made the series a console name; Big Red One (2005) is the separate PS2, Xbox and GameCube game
- Call of Duty 3 · 2006 · PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, Xbox — Treyarch’s first numbered game, and the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console — a Wii launch title with pointer aiming
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare · 2007 · PS3, Xbox 360, PC (Wii 2009, DS) — the modern setting, Price and Soap, the perk-based multiplayer — remastered in 2016; the DS version is its own game by n-Space
- Call of Duty: World at War · 2008 · PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, PS2, DS — back to the war, and the birth of Zombies as a bonus mode after the credits
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 · 2009 · PS3, Xbox 360, PC (DS: Mobilized) — No Russian, the Spec Ops mode, and the biggest launch in entertainment at the time; remastered campaign in 2020
- Call of Duty: Black Ops · 2010 · PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, DS — Cold War conspiracies, the numbers, and Zombies as a full mode — the DS cartridge is again a separate game
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 · 2011 · PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC (DS: Defiance) — the end of the first Modern Warfare trilogy, and the last Call of Duty on the Wii
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II · 2012 · PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC — two timelines, branching endings, and the first Call of Duty on Wii U

- Call of Duty: Black Ops III · 2015 · PS4, Xbox One, PC (PS3, 360 multiplayer only) — four-player co-op campaign and the biggest Zombies content of any game — the PS3 and 360 discs have no campaign at all
- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare · 2016 · PS4, Xbox One, PC — space combat; the Legacy Edition bundled Modern Warfare Remastered, which is how most people got that game
- Call of Duty: WWII · 2017 · PS4, Xbox One, PC — boots back on the ground in Normandy, after three futuristic games
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 · 2018 · PS4, Xbox One, PC — no campaign — multiplayer, Zombies and Blackout, the series’ first battle royale
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare · 2019 · PS4, Xbox One, PC — the reboot of the Modern Warfare line, with the new engine that still runs the series; Warzone followed in 2020
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War · 2020 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC — a launch-window game for PS5 and Xbox Series, set in 1981 between Black Ops and Black Ops II
- Call of Duty: Vanguard · 2021 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC — Sledgehammer’s Second World War game across four fronts; it sold below expectations, by Activision’s own account
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II · 2022 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC — the reboot’s second game — Task Force 141, and the base for Warzone 2.0
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III · 2023 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC — built in a year as a direct sequel, with the sixteen Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps remade

- Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 · 2025 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC — released 14 November 2025: a 2035 sequel to Black Ops II with a four-player co-op campaign
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 · 2026 · PS5, Xbox Series, PC, Switch 2 — due 23 October 2026 — the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console since Ghosts, and the first to drop the PS4 and Xbox One
Do you have to play them in order?
Only inside a sub-series, and even then loosely. Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare line tells one story from Call of Duty 4 to MW3, then starts again with the 2019 reboot, which MWII, MWIII and the 2026 MW4 continue. Treyarch’s Black Ops line runs from World at War through Black Ops, II and III, with Cold War slotted in between the first two and Black Ops 6 and 7 picking the thread up in the 1990s and 2030s. Everything else — Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare, WWII, Vanguard — is a one-off. Release order matters more for the hardware than the plot: the discs from Modern Warfare (2019) on are mostly downloads.
Which Call of Duty should you buy now?
- For the campaign: Modern Warfare (2019) — the reboot that reset the series, on a PS4 disc that plays on PS5.
- To play online today: Black Ops 7 or Black Ops 6 on PS5 — the games with the players.
- Complete on the disc, no download: Black Ops II or Ghosts — the last of the games that install from the disc alone.
- On a DS: Black Ops — the strongest of the five n-Space games, with a full campaign and Zombies.
- On a Wii: Black Ops — pointer aiming, split-screen Zombies, and the full campaign.
Buying Call of Duty second-hand
The DS games are their own games — and good ones
Call of Duty 4, World at War, Modern Warfare: Mobilized, Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3: Defiance on DS were built by n-Space for the DS, with their own campaigns, stylus aiming and local multiplayer. They are not cut-down ports. The cartridges are region-free and play on every DS, DS Lite, DSi and 3DS; there is no online left, and there never was much.
The Wii versions lost their online in 2014
Call of Duty 3, World at War, Modern Warfare Reflex, Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 on Wii ran their multiplayer through Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection, which closed in May 2014. The campaigns, Zombies in split-screen and local multiplayer still work; online does not. The pointer aiming is the reason to play them — it is the only Call of Duty that ever worked that way.
PS4 discs play on a PS5
Every Call of Duty from Ghosts onwards on a PS4 disc runs on a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive; from Black Ops Cold War onwards the PS4 disc usually offers a paid upgrade to the PS5 version, while the PS5 disc is the full version. Modern Warfare 4 (2026) has no PS4 version at all. A PS5 Digital Edition has no drive, so no disc plays on it.
Recent games are mostly download — check what is actually on the disc
From Modern Warfare (2019) on, the disc installs a launcher and downloads the rest, often more than a hundred gigabytes, so a fast connection is part of the purchase. The older games — Black Ops II, Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, WWII — are complete on the disc and still play offline from start to finish.

Browse tested PlayStation gamesQuestions we get asked
Do I need to play the Call of Duty games in order?
Only within a sub-series. Modern Warfare runs 4 → MW2 → MW3 (2007-2011), then the reboot Modern Warfare (2019) → MWII → MWIII → MW4. Black Ops runs World at War → Black Ops → II → III, with Cold War set between the first two and Black Ops 6 and 7 continuing on from there. Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare, WWII and Vanguard each stand alone.
How many Call of Duty games are there?
Twenty-three mainline games from Call of Duty (2003) to Modern Warfare 4 (2026), one every year since 2005. Add the handheld games, Finest Hour and Big Red One, the remasters and Warzone and the count passes thirty.
Which Call of Duty is the best one to start with?
Modern Warfare (2019) for the current style — its campaign is still the benchmark and the engine is the one the series runs on today. Black Ops II for the classic era, with a full campaign on the disc and no download needed. Black Ops 6 or 7 if you want to play online with everyone else right now.
What is the newest Call of Duty game?
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, released on 14 November 2025. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 follows on 23 October 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
Which Call of Duty games are on Nintendo consoles?
Wii: Call of Duty 3, World at War, Modern Warfare Reflex, Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3. Wii U: Black Ops II and Ghosts. DS: Call of Duty 4, World at War, Mobilized, Black Ops and Defiance. There is nothing on the original Switch; Modern Warfare 4 (2026) is the first Call of Duty on Switch 2.
