All Mario Wii games
Fifteen Mario discs came out for the Wii in Europe between 2007 and 2012 — including two of the best 3D platformers ever made and the best-selling kart racer of its generation. Because the Wii sold in enormous numbers, almost all of them are cheap used. Two carry a different name here than in America, and one Mario game Europe never got at all.
The short answer
Super Mario Galaxy (2007) and Galaxy 2 (2010) alone; Mario Kart Wii (2008) or New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009) with other people. All four are common and should be cheap. Everything on this list also plays on a Wii U.

The ones worth weighing up
Super Mario Galaxy (2007) and Galaxy 2 (2010)
The two best games on the console and, for a lot of people, the two best 3D Marios there are. Galaxy 2 is the denser one — more ideas per hour, Yoshi, and no hub world to walk around in — but it assumes you have played the first. Both are common and cheap on disc, which is the cheapest way into either: on the Switch they exist only inside 3D All-Stars, which was withdrawn from sale in 2021.
Bikes, twelve racers instead of eight, and the plastic wheel in the box. One of the best-selling games ever made, so a used copy is cheap and easy to find — and it is still the Mario Kart most European households have in a cupboard. Online play closed in 2014; four-player split screen has not.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009)
The first Mario platformer with four players on screen at once, which turns co-operation into a contest. Buy it if there are children in the house and you want the arguing to be about a game. Very common; do not overpay.
Super Paper Mario (2007)
The odd one in the Paper Mario line: a side-scrolling platformer with role-playing bones and a story people still talk about. No turn-based combat at all, which purists hold against it and everyone else forgets by the second chapter.
Super Mario All-Stars — 25th Anniversary Edition (2010)
The SNES compilation reprinted for the Wii’s twenty-fifth anniversary, with a soundtrack CD and a booklet in the box. The disc is nothing more than the 1993 collection, so what you are buying is the package: a copy without the CD and booklet is worth notably less, and plenty of used ones are missing them. Mario Strikers Charged Football (2007)
Sold as Mario Strikers Charged in America. The sequel to the GameCube game, faster and meaner, and one of the first Wii games with online play in Europe — long since switched off. Local five-a-side still works.
Boom Street (2011)
Called Fortune Street in America. A property-trading board game — think Monopoly with shares — with Mario and Dragon Quest characters on the same board. Released in Europe on 23 December 2011, two days before Christmas, and largely missed as a result. Scarcer here than the Mario Party games and much better than its reputation.
New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis (2009)
The 2004 GameCube game with motion controls bolted on. Worth knowing: the GameCube original plays on the same Wii with a GameCube controller, so unless you specifically want to swing the remote, the older disc is the cheaper buy.
The Mario game Europe never got
Mario Super Sluggers, the 2008 baseball game, came out in Japan and North America and never in the PAL region. There is no European disc to hunt for, and an American one will not run on a European Wii — the console is region-locked. It is one of very few Mario games that simply does not exist here, which is worth knowing before you spend an evening searching for it.

How many Mario games are there on the Wii?
Fifteen discs in Europe, from Mario Strikers Charged Football in 2007 to Mario Party 9 in 2012. That includes the two Galaxy games, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the three Mario & Sonic crossovers, the party and sports titles and Boom Street. It leaves out Wii Sports, Wii Party and Punch-Out!!, which are not Mario games, and the WiiWare downloads, which disappeared with the Wii Shop Channel in 2019.
Which Mario Wii game should I buy first?
Super Mario Galaxy if you are playing alone, New Super Mario Bros. Wii or Mario Kart Wii if you are not. All three are common and cheap, because the Wii sold in enormous numbers — there is no reason to pay a premium for any of them.
Which Mario game never came out in Europe?
Mario Super Sluggers, the 2008 baseball game. It was released in Japan and North America and never in the PAL region, so there is no European version to look for. An American disc will not play on a European Wii either — the Wii is region-locked.
Are Wii games region-locked?
Yes. A European disc plays on a European Wii, not on an American or Japanese one, and the other way round. Everything we sell is the European version unless the product page says otherwise.
Do I need extra controllers?
For most of these, yes. Mario Kart Wii shipped with one plastic wheel, but four-player racing needs four Wii Remotes. New Super Mario Bros. Wii needs one remote per player, held sideways. Mario Party 9 and the Mario & Sonic games are the same. A Nunchuk is needed for the Galaxy games and for Super Paper Mario’s pointer sections.
Do Wii games play on a Wii U?
Yes — a Wii U plays Wii discs in a built-in Wii mode, with Wii Remotes. What a Wii U cannot do is play GameCube discs. And a Wii cannot play Wii U discs. If you have a Wii U, this whole list works on it.
