All Mario sports games in order

Tennis, golf, football, baseball, basketball and two mixed collections — twenty-six games over forty years, most of them by Camelot, a few by Square Enix and Next Level Games. Below is every one in European release order, with the European titles (four differ from the American ones), the two games Europe never got, and which cartridge or disc to buy for each console.
The short answer
Golf (1986) → NES Open (1992) → Mario Golf and Mario Tennis on N64 and Game Boy Color (1999–2001) → the GameCube trio: Toadstool Tour, Power Tennis, Superstar Baseball, plus Mario Smash Football (2004–2005) → Slam Basketball on DS and Strikers Charged Football on Wii (2007) → Sports Mix (2011) → Tennis Open and Golf: World Tour on 3DS → Sports Superstars (2017) → Aces, Super Rush and Battle League Football on Switch → Tennis Fever on Switch 2 (2026). Nothing needs playing in order.

- Golf · 1986 · NES — the golfer is Mario, though the European box never says so; eighteen holes and a swing meter — Japan had it in 1984, Europe in November 1986
- NES Open Tournament Golf · 1992 · NES — Mario and Luigi as playable golfers, three courses and a two-player mode; the first game to put Mario’s name on a sport
- Mario’s Tennis · 1995 · Virtual Boy (Japan and America only) — the Virtual Boy pack-in — never released in Europe, because the Virtual Boy itself never was
- Mario Golf · 1999 · Nintendo 64 — Camelot’s first Mario sport: six courses, fourteen characters, and a Transfer Pak link to the Game Boy Color game below
- Mario Golf (Game Boy Color) · 1999 · Game Boy Color — a golf RPG in which you level up a club golfer to beat the Mario cast; Game Boy Color only
- Mario Tennis · 2000 · Nintendo 64 — Waluigi’s first appearance anywhere; sixteen characters and doubles for four — European release November 2000
- Mario Tennis (Game Boy Color) · 2001 · Game Boy Color — the tennis-academy RPG, linked to the N64 game through the Transfer Pak; Europe February 2001, the last Mario game for the Game Boy line
- Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour · 2004 · GameCube — the GameCube golf with ring shots and a proper physics model; links to Advance Tour by cable
- Mario Golf: Advance Tour · 2004 · Game Boy Advance — the second golf RPG, larger than the Color one; Europe got it in September 2004
- Mario Power Tennis · 2005 · GameCube — Power Shots and gimmick courts; America had it in November 2004, Europe in February 2005
- Mario Superstar Baseball · 2005 · GameCube — the only Mario baseball game ever sold in Europe — its Wii sequel never came
- Mario Smash Football · 2005 · GameCube — Super Mario Strikers in America: five-a-side, no fouls, electric fences; the European name is on the disc and the title screen
- Mario Power Tennis (Game Boy Advance) · 2005 · Game Boy Advance — Mario Tennis: Power Tour in America — Europe reused the GameCube game’s name nine months later, so check the platform on a used listing
- Mario Slam Basketball · 2007 · Nintendo DS — Mario Hoops 3-on-3 in America; made by Square Enix, with Final Fantasy characters on the court; Europe February 2007
- Mario Strikers Charged Football · 2007 · Wii — Europe first, May 2007, two months before America (Mario Strikers Charged there) — and the first Wii game with online play in Europe, since switched off
- Mario Super Sluggers · 2008 · Wii (Japan and America only) — the Superstar Baseball sequel — never released in Europe; an American disc will not run on a PAL Wii
- New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis · 2009 · Wii — the GameCube game with motion controls, Europe March 2009 — the same game, a different way to swing
- Mario Sports Mix · 2011 · Wii — volleyball, hockey, dodgeball and basketball on one disc, by Square Enix again; Europe January 2011, before America
- Mario Tennis Open · 2012 · Nintendo 3DS — gyro-aimed shots and QR-code costumes; Europe May 2012
- Mario Golf: World Tour · 2014 · Nintendo 3DS — the fullest handheld golf, with a Castle Club career; its paid DLC courses can no longer be bought since the 3DS eShop closed in 2023, so a cartridge gives you the base game
- Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash · 2015 · Wii U — Mega Mushroom tennis in HD; thin on modes, and the one Camelot game most fans skip
- Mario Sports Superstars · 2017 · Nintendo 3DS — football, baseball, tennis, golf and horse racing as full games on one cartridge; Europe first, March 2017, with an amiibo card in the box
- Mario Tennis Aces · 2018 · Nintendo Switch — zone shots, trick shots and a short story mode; the Switch tennis game
- Mario Golf: Super Rush · 2021 · Nintendo Switch — Speed Golf and a Golf Adventure with your Mii; free updates added courses through 2021
- Mario Strikers: Battle League Football · 2022 · Nintendo Switch — Battle League in America; Hyper Strikes and gear, made for eight players locally
- Mario Tennis Fever · 2026 · Nintendo Switch 2 (only) — the current tennis game, February 2026 — built for the Switch 2 and not playable on an original Switch
Which Mario sports game should you buy now?
- On a Switch: Mario Tennis Aces for tennis, Mario Golf: Super Rush for golf, Mario Strikers: Battle League Football for a room full of people — all three also play on a Switch 2.
- On a 3DS: Mario Sports Superstars — five full sports on one cartridge; Mario Golf: World Tour if golf is the point.
- On a GameCube: Mario Smash Football and Mario Power Tennis, the two everyone still argues about, and the only Mario baseball Europe ever had.
- On a Wii: Mario Strikers Charged Football, or Mario Sports Mix for a mixed evening.
- On an N64: Mario Tennis with four controllers; Mario Golf with a Transfer Pak and the Game Boy Color cartridge.
Buying Mario sports games second-hand
Four games have a different name in Europe
Mario Smash Football is Super Mario Strikers, Mario Strikers Charged Football is Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Slam Basketball is Mario Hoops 3-on-3, and the Game Boy Advance game called Mario Power Tennis here is Mario Tennis: Power Tour in America. An American list will send you looking for names that were never printed on a European box — and the Game Boy Advance Power Tennis shares its European name with the GameCube game, so check the platform on a listing before you buy.
Two never came to Europe at all
Mario’s Tennis (Virtual Boy, 1995) and Mario Super Sluggers (Wii, 2008) were released only in Japan and America. Mario Superstar Baseball on the GameCube is therefore the only Mario baseball game a European Wii or GameCube will play — an American Super Sluggers disc is region-locked out of a PAL Wii.
The pairs that talk to each other
Camelot built the golf and tennis games in linked pairs: the N64 games read the Game Boy Color games through a Transfer Pak, and the GameCube games read the Game Boy Advance games through a link cable, carrying your handheld golfer or tennis player onto the big screen. Both halves are still cheap; the Transfer Pak and cable are the parts that go missing.
Online is gone on the older discs, alive on the Switch
Mario Strikers Charged Football, Mario Tennis Open, Mario Golf: World Tour and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash all had online play through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection or the Nintendo Network, and those services are closed — the local modes are untouched. Aces, Super Rush and Battle League Football play online through Nintendo Switch Online today.

How many Mario sports games are there?
Twenty-six on this page, counting from Golf on the NES in 1986 to Mario Tennis Fever on the Switch 2 in 2026: eight tennis games, eight golf games (including Golf and NES Open), three Strikers football games, two baseball games, one basketball game and the two multi-sport collections, Sports Mix and Sports Superstars. Twenty-four of them were released in Europe. The Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series is counted separately — it has its own list.
Which Mario sports game should I buy first?
On a Switch, Mario Tennis Aces for tennis or Mario Golf: Super Rush for golf. On a 3DS, Mario Sports Superstars gives you five sports for one cartridge. On a GameCube, Mario Smash Football and Mario Power Tennis are the two everyone comes back to, and on a Wii, Mario Strikers Charged Football. For the N64, Mario Tennis over Mario Golf if you have four controllers.
Why does my American guide list Super Mario Strikers and Mario Hoops 3-on-3?
Because those are the American names. In Europe the same games were sold as Mario Smash Football and Mario Slam Basketball, and Mario Strikers Charged became Mario Strikers Charged Football. The games are identical apart from the name and the region lock; a European listing will use the European name.
Was Mario Super Sluggers released in Europe?
No. It came out in Japan and North America in 2008 and was never localised for Europe, and an American Wii disc will not play on a European Wii. The Mario baseball game that exists in Europe is Mario Superstar Baseball on the GameCube, from 2005.
Do the Switch Mario sports games work on a Switch 2?
Yes — Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf: Super Rush and Mario Strikers: Battle League Football all play on a Switch 2 from the original cartridge. Mario Tennis Fever is the other way round: a Switch 2 game that does not run on an original Switch.
Are the Mario & Sonic Olympic games Mario sports games?
They are Mario sports games with Sonic in them, made by Sega rather than Camelot or Nintendo, and there are six of them on Wii, DS, 3DS, Wii U and Switch. They are listed separately in our Mario & Sonic guide so that this list stays the Nintendo-made series.
