All Tekken games in order

Eight numbered games, two Tag Tournaments, and a handful of spin-offs — three of which are the only Tekkens ever made for a Nintendo console, and two of those were built from scratch rather than ported. Below is every Tekken in release order, arcade first where there was one, with the GBA, 3DS and Wii U versions marked and buying notes on the cartridges we stock and test.
The short answer
Tekken (1994) → 2 → 3 → Tag Tournament (1999) → 4 → 5 (2004) → 6 (2007) → Tag Tournament 2 (2011) → 7 (2015) → 8 (2024). On Nintendo: Tekken Advance (GBA, 2001), Tekken 3D: Prime Edition (3DS, 2012) and Tag Tournament 2 Wii U Edition (2012). Nothing needs playing in order; start with 8, or with 3D: Prime Edition on the go.

Which Tekken should you buy now?
- Current: Tekken 8 on PS5 — the fullest roster and the best tutorials the series has had.
- On a handheld: Tekken 3D: Prime Edition on the 3DS — forty fighters, 60 fps, one cartridge.
- Portable and cheap: Tekken Advance on the GBA — also in the second slot of a DS or DS Lite.
- The Nintendo home version: Tag Tournament 2 Wii U Edition — the biggest roster, with the Mario costumes.
Buying Tekken second-hand
The Nintendo Tekkens are their own games
Tekken Advance (GBA, 2001) is a 2D fighter with the Tekken 3 roster and a tag mode, built for the handheld. Tekken 3D: Prime Edition (3DS, 2012) is a full 3D game with forty fighters and the Blood Vengeance film. Neither is a port of a PlayStation game, and neither exists anywhere else. Tag Tournament 2 on Wii U is the PS3 game plus Nintendo extras — that one is a port, and a complete one.
Region rules
Tekken Advance is region-free and plays on any Game Boy Advance, SP, DS or DS Lite. Tekken 3D: Prime Edition is region-locked — a European cartridge for a European 3DS or 2DS. The Wii U disc is PAL for a European Wii U. Everything we sell is the European version.
Tekken 5 is the cheapest way into three classics
The PS2 disc of Tekken 5 includes the arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2 and 3 as unlockable extras — the only official home release of the arcade originals. It plays on a PS2 or a backwards-compatible early PS3.
No Tekken on the Switch
Tekken 7 and 8 never came to Nintendo consoles. The nearest thing is Pokkén Tournament DX on Switch (and the Wii U original), made by the Tekken team with Tekken’s controls — a genuine alternative if you want that feel on a Nintendo cartridge.

Do I need to play the Tekken games in order?
No. Every Tekken is complete on its own. The Mishima story runs through the numbered games — 1 to 8 — but each one recaps what it needs, and the Tag Tournaments have no story at all.
How many Tekken games are there?
Eight numbered games, two Tag Tournaments, and the spin-offs — Advance, Dark Resurrection, Hybrid, 3D: Prime Edition, Revolution, Mobile and the Street Fighter crossover — seventeen releases on this page, not counting the arcade-only updates.
Which Tekken games are on Nintendo consoles?
Three: Tekken Advance on the Game Boy Advance, Tekken 3D: Prime Edition on the 3DS, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U Edition. Tekken 7 and 8 are PlayStation, Xbox and PC only.
Which Tekken should I start with?
Tekken 8 for the current game — its Arcade Quest mode teaches the basics. For the classics, Tekken 3 or Tekken 5 on PlayStation; on a handheld, Tekken 3D: Prime Edition on the 3DS is the fullest game.
Is Tekken 3D: Prime Edition a good game?
As a fighting game, yes — forty characters, 60 fps and a solid online mode at the time. It has no story or arcade endings, which is what the reviews docked it for; as a cartridge to play on the go it holds up.
