Two sagas, two games with the same name, and two prequels that came out in the middle — that is why the order gets asked. Below is every God of War in release order with what each one is, then the story order, and the buying notes that matter for a PlayStation-only series: which discs play on a PS5, and which collections hold the Greek games.
The short answer
Greek saga: God of War (2005) → II (2007) → Chains of Olympus (PSP) → III (2010) → Ghost of Sparta (PSP) → Ascension (2013) → Sons of Sparta (2026). Norse saga: God of War (2018) → Ragnarök (2022) → Valhalla (2023), with Laufey due in 2027. Start with God of War (2018) — it plays on PS4 and PS5 and needs no homework.

- God of War Sons of Sparta · 2026 · PlayStation 5 — young Kratos in Sparta, before everything else — released in February 2026
- God of War Laufey · 2027 · PlayStation 5 (due February 2027) — Atreus’s mother, running alongside the Norse games; a remake of the Greek trilogy is announced without a date
Story order — the in-universe timeline
For a second run, or to place a game you already own. Starting with the prequels spoils the first game’s ending, which is why release order is the better first run.

Which God of War should you buy now?
- Start here: God of War (2018) on PS4 — plays on PS5 too, and the Day One Edition is the common disc.
- The newest: Ragnarök on PS5 — with the free Valhalla epilogue.
- The Greek saga on one console: God of War Saga on PS3, or III Remastered on PS4 for the finale alone.
Buying God of War second-hand
Two games are called God of War
The 2005 PS2 original and the 2018 PS4 reboot share the exact name. A second-hand listing that says "God of War" needs the platform read: PS2 is the Greek beginning, PS4 is the Norse one with Atreus. The 2018 disc is the one we stock most, usually as the Day One Edition.
What plays on a PlayStation 5
Every PS4 disc: God of War (2018), Ragnarök and III Remastered run on a PS5 with a disc drive, and the 2018 game gets a 60 fps patch there. The PS2 and PS3 discs do not — the Greek saga needs a PS3 (Collection, Origins Collection, Saga, Ascension) or the PSP originals. There is no God of War on any Nintendo console.
Ragnarök on PS4 or PS5
The same game on both; the PS5 disc has the faster loading and the higher resolution, and the Valhalla epilogue is a free download for either. If you own a PS5, buy the PS5 disc — the PS4 version cannot be upgraded for free unless you bought it digitally.
The collections are the way into the Greek games
God of War Collection (I and II), Origins Collection (the two PSP games) and Saga (all five) are PS3 discs that turn up cheaply; Ascension is the only Greek game outside them. Physical PSP copies of Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta are the collector pieces.

In what order should I play the God of War games?
Release order works best: God of War (2005) → II → Chains of Olympus → III → Ghost of Sparta → Ascension, then God of War (2018) → Ragnarök → Valhalla. The two PSP prequels and Ascension add background but were written for people who already knew Kratos. If you only want the modern games, start at God of War (2018) — it explains what it needs to.
What is the chronological order of God of War?
Sons of Sparta → Ascension → Chains of Olympus → God of War (2005) → Ghost of Sparta → Betrayal → II → III → God of War (2018) → Ragnarök → Valhalla, with Laufey (2027) alongside the Norse games. The list on this page gives both orders.
How many God of War games are there?
Ten main games — seven Greek (God of War, II, III, Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta, Ascension and Sons of Sparta from 2026) and three Norse (God of War 2018, Ragnarök and its Valhalla epilogue) — plus the Betrayal phone game and the PS3 collections that repackage the Greek ones. Laufey is due in 2027, and a remake of the Greek trilogy is announced.
Is God of War on Nintendo Switch or Xbox?
No. God of War has only ever appeared on PlayStation consoles, PSP and, since 2022, PC. The 2018 game and Ragnarök are on Steam; the Greek games are PlayStation-only.
Which God of War should I start with?
God of War (2018) on PS4 or PS5 — it is the reboot the newer games build on, it runs on a PS5, and it is the game the series is best known for today. For the classics, God of War Collection on PS3.
