Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017)

The Wii U game with every track and character from day one, plus the Booster Course Pass that doubled it to 96 tracks (sold separately, or included in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack). The best-selling Switch game there is, so a used cartridge is cheap and everywhere — and it is still the one game every Switch owner ends up with.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (2017)

Not a platformer: a grid-based tactics game in the XCOM mould, with Mario and the Rabbids in cover behind blocks. Ubisoft made it, Nintendo let them, and it is far better than the premise sounds. The Gold Edition cartridge includes the Donkey Kong Adventure expansion.

Super Mario Odyssey (2017)

The big 3D Mario of the system: Cappy lets you possess enemies and objects, from a Goomba to a T-Rex, across open kingdoms full of Power Moons. The one to buy if you buy one 3D Mario on Switch. It ships complete on the cartridge with no download needed.

Mario Tennis Aces (2018)

Tennis with trick shots, zone shots and a racket-breaking system, plus a short story mode. The online mode was busy for years and is quiet now; locally it is still a good four-player game.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (2018)

The Wii U diorama-puzzle game with a handful of Odyssey-themed levels added. Toad cannot jump, so every level is a small box you rotate and pick apart. Short, gentle and one of the best games on the system for a child who is not ready for Odyssey.

Super Mario Party (2018)

The board game back in its classic form after the car-based Wii U entry, with minigames that lean on the Joy-Con motion controls. Four players in one room is what it is for; the online board mode only arrived in a 2021 update.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (2019)

Two Wii U games on one cartridge: New Super Mario Bros. U and the harder New Super Luigi U, with Nabbit and Toadette added as easier characters. The safest 2D Mario for a family that plays together; up to four players on one screen.

Yoshi’s Crafted World (2019)

Yoshi in a cardboard-and-craft world where every level can be played from the back as well as the front. Made by Good-Feel, the Woolly World team. Easy on purpose: a Mellow Mode gives Yoshi wings, so it works for players of five or six.

Super Mario Maker 2 (2019)

Build your own Mario levels in five visual styles, or play the story mode of more than a hundred Nintendo-made ones. Sharing and downloading levels needs Nintendo Switch Online; the editor and the story mode work offline from the cartridge.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019)

Luigi and his Poltergust in a haunted hotel, one themed floor at a time, with Gooigi for two-player co-op through the whole story. Next Level Games’ best work and one of the few Nintendo games where Mario himself is the one who needs rescuing.

Paper Mario: The Origami King (2020)

Paper Mario with a ring-based battle system: you rotate the rings to line enemies up, then attack. Funnier and larger than Color Splash, though still without the experience points of the first two games. That is what The Thousand-Year Door on this list is for.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars (2020)

Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy on one cartridge, for the 35th anniversary. Sold only until 31 March 2021 and never reprinted, so this is the one Mario Switch cartridge that trades above its launch price. Check that a used copy is the real cartridge and not an empty case — the game is on the card, no download.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit (2020)

The odd one out: a real radio-controlled kart with a camera, driven from the Switch through a free download — there is no cartridge. You lay out gates on your floor and the game draws the track. Sold as Mario or Luigi sets; second-hand, make sure the kart, the four gates and the charging cable are all there.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (2021)

The Wii U four-player 3D Mario, sped up and with online co-op added, plus Bowser’s Fury: a brand-new open-world Mario that is short but points straight at what Nintendo built next. Two games for one cartridge and the best value on this list.

Mario Golf: Super Rush (2021)

Golf with a Speed Golf mode where everyone tees off at once and runs to their ball, and an RPG-style Golf Adventure with your Mii. Thin at launch; free updates added courses and characters through 2021, and all of those download to the cartridge save.

WarioWare: Get It Together! (2021)

Two hundred five-second microgames, played this time with a cast of characters who each control differently — Wario jumps and shoulder-bashes, Mona throws a boomerang. Two players at once on one screen. Wario is a Mario series by lineage, hence his place here.

Mario Party Superstars (2021)

Five boards from the N64 games and a hundred minigames from across the series, all playable with buttons rather than motion controls. Online from the start. If you want one Mario Party for a mixed-age group, this is the safer pick over Super Mario Party.

Mario Strikers: Battle League Football (2022)

Five-a-side football with items, Hyper Strikes and no referee. The European cartridge carries the word Football on the box and the title screen; the American one is just Battle League. Same game. Thin on solo content, made for local eight-player matches.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (2022)

The sequel drops the grid for free movement inside your turn and adds the Sparks, Luma-Rabbid hybrids you equip for powers. Bigger and more open than Kingdom Battle. Three DLC packs were sold separately; a used cartridge will not include them unless a code is present and unused.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)

The first all-new 2D Mario since 2012, with Wonder Flowers that turn each level upside down — pipes crawl, Mario becomes an elephant, the level sings. Four players locally, twelve online with ghosts. The 2D Mario to buy on Switch, full stop.

WarioWare: Move It! (2023)

The successor to the Wii’s Smooth Moves: two Joy-Cons, a "form" pose to copy, then a five-second microgame. Entirely motion-controlled, so it does not work in handheld mode on a Switch Lite without separate Joy-Cons. A party game first.

Super Mario RPG (2023)

The 1996 Square RPG rebuilt in 3D, the game the whole Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi line grew out of. Europe never got the SNES original, so for most European players this cartridge is the first legal way to play it at all. Around fifteen hours, with timed hits and a new post-game.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong (2024)

A remake of the 2004 Game Boy Advance game with two new worlds and a two-player co-op mode. Short puzzle levels where you carry a key to a door and free the Mini-Marios. Aimed at younger players; the Casual mode adds checkpoints and removes the timer.

Princess Peach: Showtime! (2024)

Peach’s first lead role since the DS, in a theatre where each stage gives her a costume and a play style — swordfighter, detective, patissière, kung-fu master. Easy and short by design; the right first game for a young player who wants Peach rather than Mario.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2024)

The 2004 GameCube RPG, widely held to be the best Paper Mario, remade with new music and quality-of-life changes and the original partner-and-badge combat kept intact. If Origami King left you wanting experience points and a real party, this is the one.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD (2024)

The 3DS game (Dark Moon in America) in high definition, with its mission structure kept and the ScareScraper co-op mode intact. Less lavish than Luigi’s Mansion 3 and still a full game; the missions suit short sessions.

Super Mario Party Jamboree (2024)

Seven boards, more than a hundred minigames and twenty playable characters — the biggest Mario Party in the series. Motion and button minigames both. The 2025 Switch 2 Edition is a paid upgrade of this same cartridge, so the Switch 1 version loses nothing on a Switch 2.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership (2024)

The first Mario & Luigi game in nine years and the first on a home console, with the brothers sailing a ship-shaped island between smaller islands. Timed-button combat as before, in 3D for the first time. The last new Mario game released for the original Switch.
