About the New Nintendo 2DS XL
The New Nintendo 2DS XL (2017) is the last handheld Nintendo made before the Switch, and for many the ideal retro handheld: it plays the complete 3DS and DS library, has the big screens, the C-stick and the ZL/ZR buttons of the New models, and is lighter and cheaper than the New 3DS XL. The one thing it leaves out is the 3D effect — which most players switch off anyway. Every console here is tested on both screens, all buttons, the hinge and charging; the listing says which charger and accessories come with it. Sent from the Netherlands, tracked, with no customs charges anywhere in the EU.

Why so many players pick this one
The New 2DS XL has the big screens of the New 3DS XL, the same fast processor, the same C-stick and ZL/ZR buttons, and it plays the same complete 3DS and DS library — including the handful of New-exclusive games. It simply leaves out the 3D effect, which most players switch off anyway, and that makes it lighter and cheaper. For anyone who wants to play the 3DS library today rather than collect the hardware, it is the model to get.
What else is different
Compared with the New 3DS XL it is more than "the same without 3D".
- The cameras sit in the hinge, so there is no camera bar above the top screen and no 3D slider next to it.
- The cartridge slot and the microSD card sit behind a flap on the underside, out of the way of small fingers.
- Stereo speakers on the underside and a headphone jack on the front.
- NFC for amiibo is built in; a regular 3DS or 3DS XL needs the separate NFC reader.
Colours and editions
In Europe the New 2DS XL launched in black and turquoise and in white and orange, followed by black and lime green in the Mario Kart 7 bundle. The printed editions are the ones collectors look for: the Pikachu Edition, the Poké Ball Edition, the Animal Crossing Edition and the Hylian Shield Edition. An edition is the same hardware in a different shell; which one a console is, is in its listing, with photos.
What to check on a used New 2DS XL
Three places wear first on this model: the hinge (it should hold its position without play), the top screen (scratches from the edges of the bottom screen when closed) and the C-stick, a small rubber nub that can go smooth or loose after years of use. Then the usual handheld points: dead pixels, the ZL/ZR shoulder buttons and the battery. We check all of them before a console is listed and describe the condition as it is.
The eShop is closed — the cartridges are not
The 3DS eShop closed in March 2023. A New 2DS XL plays every physical 3DS and DS cartridge exactly as before, and that library is one of the strongest a handheld ever had: Pokémon X and Y through Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Mario Kart 7, A Link Between Worlds, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Fire Emblem Awakening, and the full DS generation on top. The Keep browsing row links the 3DS, Pokémon 3DS and Pokémon DS lists.
New 2DS XL or New 3DS XL?
The same speed and the same controls. Only the 3D sets them apart.
New Nintendo 2DS XL · 2017
Clamshell · no 3D · C-stick · lightest XL
Folds like an XL, has the New models’ C-stick and speed, and simply leaves out the 3D. The lightest of the clamshells.
New Nintendo 3DS XL · 2015
Same hardware · with 3D
The same console with the glasses-free 3D screen. Its own page.
Nintendo 2DS · 2013
Flat slate · no hinge
The cheaper way into the same library: one flat piece with no hinge to break, and no C-stick. Its own page.
- Both screens and the hinge tested
- Dead pixels, a loose hinge and a worn card reader are what go wrong on this family. All three are checked.
- Plays the complete 3DS and DS library
- Including the handful of titles that need the New models’ extra power — only the 3D effect is missing.
- Tracked EU shipping, 30-day returns
- Sent from the Netherlands — no customs charges anywhere in the EU.
Does the New 2DS XL play 3DS games?
Yes — every Nintendo 3DS and DS game. The only difference with the New 3DS XL is that the 2DS XL does not show the 3D effect.
What is the difference with the regular Nintendo 2DS?
The New 2DS XL folds shut, has larger screens, the C-stick and ZL/ZR buttons and the faster processor of the New models. The regular 2DS is one flat piece without those extras — cheaper, and with no hinge to break.
Is a New 2DS XL region-locked?
Yes. A European (PAL) console plays European 3DS games; DS games are region-free. We sell European consoles and European games, so they simply work together.
What should I look for on a used 2DS XL?
The screens (scratches, dead pixels), the hinge and the buttons. We test every console on exactly those points and describe its condition honestly in the listing.
What does shipping to my country cost?
We ship tracked to all 27 EU countries. A console travels as a parcel: €21,95 to Germany, France, Italy and Spain, €23,95 to Denmark and Austria, €28,95 to Sweden. The exact rate for your country appears at checkout before you pay — and there are no customs charges anywhere inside the EU.
Shipped from the Netherlands
- Your order leaves our own stock in Enter, the Netherlands, and travels to you with PostNL — always tracked, so you know exactly where your parcel is.
- There are no customs borders inside the EU: no customs, no import duties, no extra VAT. The amount you see at checkout is the final amount.
We ship exclusively from the Netherlands. Your parcel therefore crosses a border: it takes longer than a domestic delivery, and shipping costs more than it would at a seller in your own country.
I hope Gameshop Enter gives you back a piece of how it used to be.
