Super Mario Sunshine — buying the original GameCube disc
Super Mario Sunshine (2002) is Mario on holiday: the island of Isle Delfino, a water pack on his back (FLUDD) and 120 Shines to collect. It appeared only on the GameCube and was never re-released on its own — which makes the original disc the way to play it, and a used disc the thing to check.
The short answer
The GameCube disc is the only stand-alone version there is; the Switch collection that included it was sold for a limited time and withdrawn. It plays on a GameCube and on the early Wii models with GameCube ports. The one thing that wears is the underside of the mini-disc — every copy of ours is checked and play-tested.
The odd one out that became a classic
At release Sunshine was the strange entry — a water pack, one tropical island, and a Mario hauled in front of a judge. Twenty years on, that eccentricity is exactly why it is sought after: the secret levels without FLUDD rank among the best platforming Nintendo ever made, and Yoshi drinks fruit juice here. It is also the only major 3D Mario adventure that never got a stand-alone re-release — only the limited Switch collection Super Mario 3D All-Stars (2020-2021, since withdrawn) carried it again.
What to check on a used copy
- The underside of the disc. Scratches are the only real wear on a GameCube mini-disc. We check every disc and test that it reads and plays.
- The save. GameCube games save to a memory card, not to the disc — a used copy always starts clean, and you need a memory card of your own.
- The edition. Player's Choice and Nintendo Selects are the same game with a different cover band. For playing it makes no difference; for a collector it does, and we name the edition in every listing.
Playing it on a Wii? The early models with GameCube controller ports and memory-card slots run it; later models and the Wii Mini lack those ports. More of the purple cube is in our GameCube list.

Can I play Super Mario Sunshine on the Switch?
Only through Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the collection Nintendo released in a limited window in 2020-2021 and then withdrew from sale. Physical copies of that are sought after; the GameCube original remains the affordable route.
Does a GameCube disc play on the Wii?
Yes, on the early Wii models with GameCube controller ports and memory card slots. You do need a GameCube controller and a GameCube memory card. Later Wii models and the Wii Mini lack those ports.
