Super Mario 3D Land — buying the original 3DS cartridge
Super Mario 3D Land (2011) mixes two worlds: levels with the structure of a classic 2D Mario, built in the space of a 3D adventure. Short, tightly designed courses with the Tanooki suit in the lead — and after the credits the game doubles itself with eight extra Special Worlds. One cartridge, and one rule to know before you buy it.
The short answer
The 3DS is region-locked, so a European console needs a European (PAL) cartridge — every listing of ours states the region. It plays on a 2DS too, just without the depth effect. Looking for the multiplayer sequel instead: that is Super Mario 3D World on Wii U and Switch.
The bridge between 2D and 3D
Nintendo built 3D Land for players who bailed out at Super Mario 64: no open worlds, but bounded levels with a flagpole at the end — only now in full 3D. The Tanooki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 returned here after twenty years and instantly became the face of the game. Reach the credits and you discover the game is only halfway done.
3D Land or 3D World?
3D World is the later sequel for the Wii U and Switch, with multiplayer. 3D Land is the 3DS original where that recipe began: more compact, single-player only, and made for short sessions. Both are on the shelf here when we have them — the Wii U copy of 3D World shows up in the list below.
What to check on a used copy
- The region. The 3DS is the only Nintendo handheld that is fully region-locked: a European console takes a PAL cartridge. We state the region in every listing.
- The save. 3DS cartridges save to flash memory — no battery to run empty. Counterfeits are rare on the 3DS because the card format is technically complex, but every copy still goes through our authenticity check and a play test.
- The edition. Nintendo Selects is the same game with a different cover band; for playing it makes no difference, and we name the edition in every listing.

Does Super Mario 3D Land play on a 2DS?
Yes, on the whole 3DS and 2DS family — on a 2DS just without the 3D depth effect. The game is fully playable that way; the 3D effect is an extra, not a requirement.
Will an American cartridge work on my European 3DS?
