Nintendo DSi — two cameras, SD slot, tested

Personally tested · Shipped from the Netherlands with PostNL tracking · 3-8 working days

About the Nintendo DSi

The Nintendo DSi (2009) refreshed the DS Lite with two cameras, an SD card slot, slightly larger and brighter screens and DSiWare. It is thinner than the Lite — and to get there Nintendo dropped the Game Boy Advance slot, so loose GBA cartridges do not work on it; for the DS library itself that makes no difference. The Pokémon Black and White editions in Reshiram and Zekrom livery came from this generation. Every console here is tested on both screens, the hinge, all buttons, the touch screen and charging; the listing says which charger comes with it. Sent from the Netherlands, tracked, with no customs charges anywhere in the EU.

What the DSi changed from the DS Lite

Nintendo rebuilt the DS Lite around a camera and a download shop, and dropped one thing to get there.

  • Two cameras with a simple photo editor and a photo channel on the home menu.
  • An SD card slot for photos, music and DSiWare downloads.
  • Slightly larger and brighter screens, 3.25 inches with five brightness levels.
  • Thinner and a little lighter, in a matte shell that scratches less than the glossy DS Lite.
  • No Game Boy Advance slot — and with it the Rumble Pak and the Guitar Hero grip were gone.

DSiWare and the DSi Shop

The DSi was Nintendo’s first handheld with its own download shop. That DSi Shop closed in March 2017, so new DSiWare cannot be downloaded any more; whatever is already installed on a console keeps working. For a buyer today the cartridge library is what counts — and with more than two thousand DS games it is the largest of any handheld.

Colours and editions

The DSi launched in Europe in matte black and white, later joined by blue, pink, red, light blue and lime green. The Pokémon Black and White editions with Reshiram and Zekrom on the lid came out alongside those games and are the ones collectors ask for. Which colour and edition a console is, is in its listing, with photos of the shell.

What to check on a used DSi

The hinge is sturdier than on the DS Lite, but the L and R shoulder buttons are sensitive to dust and stop responding — we test both. Beyond that: the touch screen (calibration and scratches), the cameras, the SD slot and the battery, which on a fifteen-year-old console measurably lasts less than new. The listing says how each console came through the test.

DSi, DSi XL or DS Lite?

One library, three bodies. Cameras and the GBA slot are what separate them.

  • Nintendo DSi · 2009

Two cameras · SD slot · no GBA slot

Thinner than the Lite, with two cameras, an SD card slot and a brighter screen. The Pokémon Black and White editions came from this generation.

    Largest screens

The same console with much bigger screens — for long sessions. Its own page.

  • Nintendo DS Lite · 2006

    Has the GBA slot

The one to pick if you also own Game Boy Advance cartridges. Its own page.

What is the difference between the DSi and the DSi XL?

The size. The DSi XL has clearly larger screens and a heavier body; the technology, cameras and DSiWare are the same. Both play the complete DS library.

Does the Nintendo DSi play Game Boy Advance games?

No. The DSi has no GBA slot — Nintendo removed it in 2009. The DS Lite is the model that plays both DS and GBA cartridges.

Are DS games region-locked on a DSi?

Regular DS cartridges are region-free. The handful of DSi-enhanced titles (Pokémon Black and White among them) are region-locked on DSi and 3DS consoles. We sell European consoles and European games, so they work together.

What does shipping to my country cost?

We ship tracked to all 27 EU countries. A console travels as a parcel: €21,95 to Germany, France, Italy and Spain, €23,95 to Denmark and Austria, €28,95 to Sweden. The exact rate for your country appears at checkout before you pay — and there are no customs charges anywhere inside the EU.

Shipped from the Netherlands

  • Your order leaves our own stock in Enter, the Netherlands, and travels to you with PostNL — always tracked, so you know exactly where your parcel is.
  • There are no customs borders inside the EU: no customs, no import duties, no extra VAT. The amount you see at checkout is the final amount.
Delivery time across the EU3-8 business days

We ship exclusively from the Netherlands. Your parcel therefore crosses a border: it takes longer than a domestic delivery, and shipping costs more than it would at a seller in your own country.

I hope Gameshop Enter gives you back a piece of how it used to be.
