Game Boy Color — original, on two AA batteries, tested

Personally tested · Shipped from the Netherlands with PostNL tracking · 3-8 working days

About the Game Boy Color

The Game Boy Color (1998) brought colour to a library that was already enormous. It plays both the original Game Boy games and the Color titles, runs for ages on two AA batteries and has no built-in battery that can age — which is exactly why it is one of the most reliable handhelds to buy second-hand. There is no backlight: it wants a lamp or a window, as it was sold. Every console here is tested on the screen, all buttons, the sound and the cartridge slot, and the battery cover and shell are described as they are. Sent from the Netherlands, tracked, with no customs charges anywhere in the EU.

What the Game Boy Color can do

Inside it is a faster Game Boy with a colour screen — and that is exactly what makes it so dependable.

  • The screen shows up to 56 colours at once from a palette of over 32,000, without any lighting: play by daylight or a lamp.
  • Three kinds of cartridge fit: grey Game Boy games (given an automatic colour palette), black dual-mode games that run on both systems, and clear Color-only games that need a Color.
  • Two AA batteries run it for ten hours or more. There is no rechargeable cell, so nothing has gone flat after twenty-five years.
  • The infrared port on top trades Mystery Gifts in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal; the link cable port trades and battles Pokémon and plays two-player Tetris.

Colours and editions

The Color is famous for its colours: Berry (red), Grape (purple), Kiwi (lime green), Dandelion (yellow), Teal and the clear Atomic Purple. Printed editions include the yellow Pokémon edition with Pikachu and Pichu and the Pokémon Gold and Silver edition. A reshell — an original console in a new shell — is always stated as such in our listings; we would rather show an original shell with wear than hide it.

What to check on a used Game Boy Color

The screen first: vertical or horizontal lines dropping out are the known fault of this generation, so we test every screen with a cartridge in. The battery contacts must be free of corrosion from leaked batteries. Then the volume wheel, the buttons, the speaker and the cartridge slot. The screen lens is plastic and scratches easily; what it looks like is in the photos.

Which games

The Color-era library runs from Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal and the two Zelda Oracle games to Wario Land 3 and Mario Tennis, and the original Game Boy library sits underneath it: Tetris, Super Mario Land, Link’s Awakening and Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow. The Keep browsing row links the Game Boy and Pokémon Game Boy lists.

Game Boy Color, Pocket or Advance SP?

Which one plays what, and which one has a lit screen.

  • Game Boy Color · 1998

Colour screen · 2× AA · no backlight

The first colour Game Boy, and one that still runs for ages on two AA batteries. Plays Game Boy Color games plus the whole original Game Boy library.

  • Game Boy Advance SP · 2003

Lit screen · rechargeable · plays GB, GBC and GBA

If you want a lit screen and the GBA library on top, the SP plays everything the Color does and more. Its own page.

  • Game Boy Pocket · 1996

    Monochrome · 2× AAA

The slim black-and-white original. Plays the original Game Boy library only — on the Game Boy family page.

Screen, buttons and contacts tested
The battery contacts are what usually fail on a Color. They are checked, as is the screen for dead lines.
Original Nintendo hardware
No clones, no rebuilt shells sold as original. If a console has been reshelled, the listing says so.
Tracked EU shipping, 30-day returns
Sent from the Netherlands — no customs charges anywhere in the EU.
Which games work on a Game Boy Color?

Game Boy Color games and the whole original Game Boy library. Game Boy Advance cartridges do not fit — for those you need a Game Boy Advance or Advance SP.

Is the Game Boy Color screen lit?

No. The Color has no backlight and no frontlight; it is played by daylight or a lamp, exactly as it was sold. The Game Boy Advance SP is the model with a lit screen.

Is the Game Boy Color region-locked?

No. Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware plays cartridges from any region, so a European console runs Japanese and American games too.

What batteries does it take?

Two AA batteries, and it runs for ages on them. There is no built-in battery that can age — one reason this is such a reliable handheld to buy second-hand.

What does shipping to my country cost?

We ship tracked to all 27 EU countries. A console travels as a parcel: €21,95 to Germany, France, Italy and Spain, €23,95 to Denmark and Austria, €28,95 to Sweden. The exact rate for your country appears at checkout before you pay — and there are no customs charges anywhere inside the EU.

Shipped from the Netherlands

  • Your order leaves our own stock in Enter, the Netherlands, and travels to you with PostNL — always tracked, so you know exactly where your parcel is.
  • There are no customs borders inside the EU: no customs, no import duties, no extra VAT. The amount you see at checkout is the final amount.
Delivery time across the EU3-8 business days

We ship exclusively from the Netherlands. Your parcel therefore crosses a border: it takes longer than a domestic delivery, and shipping costs more than it would at a seller in your own country.

I hope Gameshop Enter gives you back a piece of how it used to be.
