Pokémon Diamond & Pearl — buying the Sinnoh originals
Diamond and Pearl (Nintendo DS, 2007) opened generation 4 in Sinnoh. Two cartridges, one story, and three questions every buyer has: Diamond or Pearl, the originals or Platinum — and are these the games, or the Switch remakes that carry almost the same name? All three answered below.
The short answer
Same story, so choose on the legendary — Dialga in Diamond, Palkia in Pearl. Want Sinnoh at its fullest and fastest: Platinum, the expanded revision. And these are the 2007 DS originals, not Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl — those are the 2021 Switch remakes. Generation 4 has no region lock, so any copy plays on a European DS, 3DS or 2DS.
Diamond or Pearl?
The two versions tell an identical story and differ where Pokémon games always have: the cover legendary — Dialga, ruler of time, against Palkia, ruler of space — and a set of version-exclusive Pokémon. Diamond has Murkrow, Stunky and Scyther among others, Pearl has Misdreavus, Glameow and Pinsir. Completing the Sinnoh Pokédex means trading with a player of the other version, locally between two DS systems.
Diamond and Pearl — or Platinum?
Diamond and Pearl are the affordable way into Sinnoh and the originals collectors want. Platinum (2009) is the same adventure, expanded: a longer story around the Distortion World, Giratina in its Origin Forme, the Battle Frontier and more Pokémon before the credits — and it runs noticeably faster. If you only play one generation-4 game, Platinum is the one; it is also the scarcer and pricier cartridge.
One thing to know before you buy the originals: battles and menus in Diamond and Pearl run noticeably slower than in Platinum. That is well known, Nintendo addressed it in the revision, and it is not a defect in your cartridge — but if slow menus bother you, Platinum is the better pick.
The originals or the Switch remakes?
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (2021) are 3D remakes of exactly these two games and play only on the Switch — they are based on Diamond and Pearl, not on Platinum, so the Distortion World and the Battle Frontier are not in them. The originals on this page play on every DS, DS Lite, DSi, 3DS and 2DS. And because generation 4 has no region lock, a USA cartridge runs on a European console too, in English; the lock only came with generation 5. We state the region in every listing regardless.
The authenticity check, in order of certainty
- The save test. Save, power off, restart. DS saves live on flash memory — a genuine cartridge keeps your progress, many counterfeit boards lose it the moment the console switches off. No battery is involved.
- Label and weight. A fake feels light, and its label colour is slightly off, its print glossy and blurred where an original is sharp and matte.
- The engraving. A genuine DS card carries the Nintendo engraving next to the contacts and a crisp stamp with a moulded serial on the back — and no screw: DS cards are glued and clicked, so a screw is itself a warning sign.

Will an American Diamond or Pearl work on my European DS or 3DS?
Yes. Generation 4 has no region lock: a USA copy plays on any DS, DS Lite, DSi, 3DS or 2DS, European ones included — the game is then in English. The region lock only arrived with generation 5 (Black and White) on the DSi and 3DS, so with Diamond and Pearl it does not come into play. We state the region in every listing anyway.
Is there a battery inside that can run empty?
No. DS cartridges save to flash memory, so your progress keeps without a battery — that is the difference with Game Boy and GBA Pokémon. It also makes a tested Diamond or Pearl a safe buy, because the save test we run on every cartridge is the most reliable authenticity check there is.
Can I move Pokémon from Diamond or Pearl to newer games?
Trading within the DS family works as it always did, locally between two consoles. From Diamond or Pearl to generation 5 (Black and White) it goes through Poké Transfer, which still works with the physical cartridges and two DS systems. Going the other way, Pal Park brings Pokémon in from generation 3 (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald) — that needs the GBA slot of an original DS or DS Lite.
How do I spot a fake Diamond or Pearl cartridge?
Counterfeit DS cartridges often have a label colour that is slightly off, miss the Nintendo engraving next to the contacts, or lose your save after switching off. Sinnoh games are among the more counterfeited DS titles. The decisive test is saving — power off, restart, and the progress must still be there. We run it on every copy.
