Good to know: save battery not replaced

This cartridge stores your progress on an internal battery. After 20+ years the original batteries are often flat — saving is then not possible. The game plays perfectly well, but progress is lost when you switch off. Replacement is possible.

One of a kind — only reserved at checkout

Shipping NZ$81.95 — your parcel leaves the Netherlands.

Order more than one and you share the shipping: a second game rides along free.

Orders up to NZ$1,000 are not charged GST or duty at the border (Customs may apply a small levy of a few dollars). Above NZ$1,000, New Zealand Customs charges 15% GST (plus duty where it applies) and an import entry fee before delivery — none of it is included in the price at checkout.

Crossing the border costs you more and takes longer. That you accept that anyway means a great deal to me.

We ship from the Netherlands: your parcel crosses the world, so it takes longer and costs more than a domestic delivery. Orders up to NZ$1,000 are not charged GST or duty at the border (Customs may apply a small levy of a few dollars); above NZ$1,000, New Zealand Customs charges 15% GST (plus duty where it applies) and an import entry fee before delivery — none of it is included in the price at checkout.

On a New Zealand console: European (PAL) edition — New Zealand shares the PAL region with Europe, so it plays on your Game Boy, region lock or not. Game text in English unless the name says otherwise; the box and manual are the European print.

New Zealand is outside the EU. Orders up to NZ$1,000 are not charged GST or duty at the border: we are not registered for New Zealand GST, so nothing is added — Customs may only apply a small import levy of a few dollars per consignment. Above NZ$1,000, New Zealand Customs charges 15% GST (plus duty where it applies) and an import entry fee, collected before delivery. None of this is included in the price at checkout. You pay in New Zealand dollars — Credit card or PayPal. The amount at checkout is what your card or PayPal is charged, at our fixed shop rate; your bank converts nothing.

Why does shipping abroad cost this much?

Inside the Netherlands a single game fits through the letterbox — NZ$8.81, tracking included. That service stops at the border. Anything leaving the country goes with PostNL as an international parcel, which is a different and considerably more expensive service. That is where the NZ$81.95 comes from: the border itself is not what costs money, the cheap service simply ends there.

That amount covers the PostNL rate to your country plus the packaging: bubble mailer or box, an antistatic sleeve for the cartridge, and tape. We never drop the tracking — on a parcel that crosses a border, shipping without proof of delivery is a risk for both of us.

Without you there would be nothing to grow. Every order that comes in here is the reason this shop can get bigger — and the reason I can keep doing this.

About this product

Pokemon Gold for Game Boy / Color — a classic from the Pokémon series, among the most sought-after Nintendo games there are.

Generation 2 on Game Boy Color. Two complete regions — Johto and Kanto — a day-night cycle and 100 new Pokémon. For many still the best.

Cartridge cleaned and tested on original hardware, ready to play.

The Game Boy / Color came out in 1989: monochrome screen, AA batteries and 8-bit classics — the console that defined handheld gaming. On the original cartridge the game runs the way it was meant to — and keeps working for years to come.

Who is this for? Anyone who would rather play on a real Game Boy / Color than in an emulator — collectors who want the original in their hands, and players who simply want that feeling back.

What to know before buying a Pokémon game: Pokémon cartridges are the most counterfeited game cartridges in the world. We check every copy ourselves — the label, the screw on the back, the board inside — so you know for sure you are getting an original, not a fake. In doubt? Send us a message and we will take extra photos for you.

European (PAL) edition — New Zealand shares the PAL region with Europe, so it plays on your Game Boy, region lock or not. Game text in English unless the name says otherwise; the box and manual are the European print. Every item passes our authenticity check (shell, board, Nintendo markings) and a function test — you're buying 100% original Nintendo.

Shipped from the Netherlands with PostNL tracking to New Zealand: from NZ$81.95; no GST or duty on orders up to NZ$1,000. 30-day returns.

Seen it cheaper elsewhere?

For most titles there’s also a private listing online, sometimes a few euros cheaper. The difference isn’t in the title, but in the copy itself and in everything around it.

Does it work?
Here: Has been running here — save and label checked — before it went online.
Private seller: ‘Works’ in the photo. You test it yourself, after buying.
Is it genuine?
Here: Six checks: screw, label, circuit board, weight, save and boot. A reproduction doesn’t get through.
Private seller: Fakes are a plague with Pokémon and GBA games, and in a photo you can’t tell the difference.
If it disappoints?
Here: 30-day cooling-off period, and a 30-day warranty that it works.
Private seller: No right of withdrawal: consumer law doesn’t apply between private individuals. Buyer protection only covers the first 48 hours after delivery; after that you’re on your own.
Who’s behind it?
Here: One person, who has held this game personally and answers your question personally.
Private seller: Varies per listing.

Why you still remember this

The clock that kept running while you were at school

For the first time, night in the game was actually night, with Pokémon you never saw during the day. You kept track of the day of the week for that one encounter, and just when you thought you were done, there turned out to be a second region behind the first.

One copy, this copy. This is the generation with time itself inside the cartridge. They stopped making them new long ago; what’s going around is what someone kept.

Yes, we have more Pokemon games in stock — all original and personally tested.
How do I know Pokemon Gold is genuine and not a fake?
We run a 6-point authenticity check on every Pokémon game: (1) screw and shell — Game Boy and Game Boy Color close with a 3.8 mm gamebit screw, Game Boy Advance with a Y-shaped tri-wing; fakes often use a Phillips screw, and DS and 3DS cards are glued with no screw at all; (2) label print and colour, with a sharp Nintendo Seal; (3) the circuit board inside on Game Boy, Color and Advance — original Nintendo print and the right product code (on a DS or 3DS card: the code on the back); (4) the weight — Game Boy 18-24 g, GBA 10-13 g, DS 3.6-4.1 g; fakes with thinner plastic weigh noticeably less; (5) a save test: save, switch off, load again; (6) a play test on original hardware. Lenn has been doing this since 2019.
Does Pokemon Gold have a save battery that can run flat?
Only games with a save function have one: a CR2025 in Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, a CR2032 in the N64 titles that save to SRAM — they usually last 10 to 20 years. A game that works with passwords or high scores has no battery to run flat. For every game with a save we test saving before it ships: make a save, switch off, load again. If the battery runs flat later, it can be replaced: within 30 days of purchase we do it for free.

I hope Gameshop Enter gives you back a piece of how it used to be.

That it’s soon in your hands again and feels exactly the way you remember it — that’s what this shop was started for.
